Basketball
- Umanga Khatiwoda - 23047, Gra ... 11 November, 2021

Basketball is a widely popular and loved sport that is played all around the world. An essay on basketball would be incomplete without the mention of its smart moves and team-building benefits. Basketball is believed to have originated in Canada and the United States of America in the 19th century. There are several health benefits of playing basketball and it is an extremely fun physical activity.
Numerous physical and mental benefits result from playing basketball. Basketball is highly effective in promoting the cardiovascular health of its players. A healthy heart diminishes risks of heart diseases later in one’s life. Basketball’s high physical demand is crucial in burning calories and reducing body fat in its players.
In basketball, many violations are “fouls.” An example of fouls includes disruptive physical contact or personal foul penalized to an offensive by awarding the opponent player a free throw if he is fouled during the shooting process. Certain violations of the rules such as unsportsmanlike conduct are punishable by issuing a technical foul assessed against bench personnel, team or players. Technical fouls earn the opponents a free throw. During a regular game, the ball must be within the court. If a team sends the ball out, it loses possession to their opponent. The ball is out of the court if it dashes over the borderline or is in contact with a player outside the court. This is different from other sports such as volleyball, tennis or football where the ball remains, or the player remains inside provided any part is in touch with the borderline.
Players with the ball should not step with both their feet without dribbling, as this will be a violation referred to as travelling. The player’s hand cannot be directly below the ball while dribbling, as this will be an infraction called carrying the ball. Another rule of basketball is that the ball cannot be struck by the fist or be kicked. If a team gains control of their opponent’s side or front half court, it should not return the ball to their side or backcourt and be the first to possess it. Violating these rules leads to a change of the shot clock if committed by the defense or loss of ball possession.
There are four quarters in a regular basketball game, and each takes 10 or 12 minutes. In college basketball games, the game uses two-twenty minute halves. Extra time should take 5 minutes in all games except in high school, where it takes four minutes. Teams need to change sides after the first half of the game. A typical basketball game might take approximately 2 hours excluding the time when the game is inactive. At any given time, the court should have ten players, 5 from both sides. Despite substitutions being unrestricted, it can only be performed when the game is stopped. Additionally, teams must have a uniform consisting of a jersey and a pair of shorts. For identification purposes, the jersey should have a unique number in the team printed at the front and back. In some instances, the jerseys have the names of players, sponsors and team printed on them.
For a team to win a basketball game, it needs to have more points than their opponents at the end of the game. A tie, especially when the two teams end in a draw, is broken by adding extra time. The ball advances in the court either by bouncing while running or walking, or by passing from one player to another. The term dribbling refers to the advancing of the ball while running or walking. However, it is against the rules not to dribble the ball while moving, to double dribble, or to carry it. Double dribbling refers to holding the ball with both hands then continuing dribbling.
In conclusion, regulation basketball hoop comprises a rim or basket attached to a backboard. Violating the rules of the game results in a change of the shot clock if committed by the defense or loss of ball possession. Basketball teams comprise of five players, which includes the point guard, shooting guard, power forward, small forward and center. A typical basketball game might take approximately 2 hours excluding the time when the game is inactive.

Age of Sails
- Samyam Shrestha - 2022012, Gr ... 11 November, 2021

A battleship is an armored warship which consists of larger caliber guns which dominated naval warfare. A ship of line was a naval warship constructed during the age of sail. It was designed for naval tactics which depended upon two columns of opposing warships maneuvering the volley fire of cannons along their broadsides. The opposing ships with more firepower had more advantage. HMS Victoria was the first rate three decker ship of the line commissioned displacing 6959 tons. She was the largest wooden ship that entered the service. HMS Napoleon was the world's first steam-powered battleship, 90 - gun ship of the line of French navy which is also considered as the first screw battleship that was launched in 1850.
The great ‘Age of Sails’ is said to have existed between 1600 - 1850. The Spanish armada of 1588 started the trend for large scale sea battles. In the era of prefabrication, the variety of warships produced was staggering, and often unique warships were made during the process. But all the warships followed the same principle when it came into combat. “Men of War” termed ships were very impressive, heavily armed and feared by many people. These ships were one of the dangerous things to fight against. But, difficult to handle and slow were its major drawbacks. Minor, small ships were used for scouting areas whereas the grand fleet consisted of heavy armed weapons, most used in battle. During this period the tactics of engagement were simple in concept, but difficult to practice. Warships would line up in one deck showing their broadside. As a warship, major guns are located at the side of the ship. So, to show its full potential, the ships should be aligned showing their broadside to the enemy. It was a major advantage and disadvantage for the ship as exposing broadside results in more exposure of place to get hit and can be an advantage as the ship can use its full arm and ammunition. Hence, the naval tactic was termed “line of battle”.
As the sailing vessel or ship reached their peak of size and complexity during the mid-19th century to early 20th century. This period is referred to as the “Golden Age of Sail”. After the construction of HMS Napoleon, multiple steam engine battleships were visible in action during the Crimean war. An ironclad is a battleship which was protected with iron and steel plates which used a steam engine as its major source of propulsion. March 1862, Battle of Hamptons Roads was noted as the first fight between ironclads, ironclad CSS Virginia fought USS Monitor. It was a naval battle during the American Civil War.
The Age of sail had ended by 1873 with HMS Devastation being commissioned. It was the first battleship that didn’t carry any sails.

- Anukrama Poudyal - 22031, Gra ... 10 November, 2021

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.”
- Sambriddhi Neupane - 23036, G ... 10 November, 2021

The quote above was written by Plato, an Athenian philosopher. Music is a learning, a therapy and a teaching tool. Music is a part of all of our lives, from childhood to old age. We all got introduced to music from our mother singing us to sleep. Music is therapy because of its positive changes in human behavior. Music is one of the most calming and soothing things. It is not only created by people, but it is also all around us in nature. In the mornings, when the birds chirp, the loud sound of waves in the ocean swishing, the hissing sound of trees and leaves rustling, all are the music in their way.Music has many benefits. It especially has health benefits. Music helps us reduce stress, improve mood, lessens anxiety, improves memory, improves exercise, eases pain, etc. It also has social benefits such as; it strengthens our empathy. It is also beneficial for students. Music positively impacts a child’s academic performance and assists in developing their social skills. A study from John Hopkins Medicine proved that music can give a brain workout.
Everyone has a different reason to listen to music.  Listening to your favorite song can completely uplift your mood if you are feeling down. Everybody is attached to music in their own way. Everyone has a different and unique reason for listening to music. In my opinion, everyone should listen to music because it can act as a company when no one is with you. There are different types of music so we have choices to listen to the type we like.
Nowadays, pop music is very popular. Almost everyone listens to pop music these days, especially teenagers. Music has evolved and has shifted its way to the time of now. The popularity of pop music skyrocketed in the 1980s. Pop stars like Michael Jackson rose to fame in our quickly growing society. Hip-hop also gained the platform and rose to fame after the 1980s. People today still listen to songs from the ’80s. Today, you can see teenagers and youths have earphones plugged in all the time. Pop music has also played a huge role in evolving the fashion industry and style. Teenagers also try to dress up like these pop stars and this can be a distracting factor for them. Apart from these, music has healed and helped people overcome their fear, pain and stressful life.
Music has healing power and people often listen to music while meditating. It is also used for therapy. The Tibetan singing bowl also has these properties. The Tibetan singing bowl is a type of bell that vibrates and produces a rich and deep tone when played. Buddhist monks use this bowl for meditation practice. This singing bowl also produces music that is also used for personal spirituality.
As mentioned above, music has different purposes and different uses in an individual’s life. “Music is the universal language of mankind” this phrase was first said by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, an American poet. And Harvard's study also states that it is a universal language. Every culture enjoys music and songs. Music serves many different purposes. So, in my opinion, it is an essential part of our life.

Can violence resolve terrorism?
- Adhit Upadhyay - 22003, Grade ... 10 November, 2021

War on terrorism is terrorism itself. Terrorism is a global concern. We cannot solve terrorism which itself is a violent act by the means of violence. It is not the terrorists that we need to kill, rather the psychology of the terrorists. As put in by Malala Yousafzai, using violence as a tool to counter terrorism can kill terrorists but not terrorism. Violence can never get us to a final solution.

Whether or not, to use violence as a way to counter terrorism has always been a topic of discussion to everyone.  It threatens peace and security. It is a criminal act where the innocents are killed in order to affect others. In terrorism, a group of people compels an individual, group, organization or the government  to do any act by risking the lives of the prisoners. Terrorism is an evil act, but ill treatments and tortures taken as a way to combat terrorism can make it even worse. Such measures espoused as method to fight terrorism has questioned our potentiality and sensibility to fight against the terrorism.

Violence against violence creates more violence. Through violence, we cannot stop terrorism. Terrorism will still be there no matter how badly we torture the terrorists as they do not get affected by their death or of any of their members. There are terrorists who accept their own death to harm other people and to complete their aim. When even death does not stop terrorism, being violent to end it is not going to help. To actually win terrorism, we need to know their root cause and begin solving it from its root. We need to start thinking from the terrorist’s psychology. Among various reasons for a person to get involved in terrorism, lack of awareness and illiteracy are some. The person falls prey due to lack of awareness. They do not realize them being the reason for the conflict. They can easily be influenced and misguided by others and might not have the ability of making the appropriate decision.  So, increasing awareness about terrorism, running campaigns about how it can affect the world, etc. might help. When combating terrorism, we need to act sensibly rather than implementing the violence.

Brutality cannot help us in countering terrorism. Instead, other techniques which are non-violent will truly help in ending terrorism should be considered. Terrorism should be dealt with in a non-discriminatory and non-retroactive manner. The major reason behind the terrorism is the stereotypical behaviour shown towards the those following religions like Islam and accuse them for being a terrorist even when they condemn such acts.  Those people are boycotted socially and politically just because of the religion they follow which creates hatred among people. Also, the media coverage exhibits them in a negative way. All these must be considered and lead towards the betterment of society.

- Safal Gautam - 22016, Grade X ... 29 October, 2021

- Pranjal Khatiwoda - 23030, Gr ... 29 October, 2021

The Russian Revolution
- Aashrab Khanal - 22001, Grade ... 29 October, 2021

For almost three centuries the Romanov dynasty ruled Russia. The Romanovs lost power in Russia in February of 1917 when a revolution resulted in the dissolution of the monarchy. The Russian Revolution brought further chaos and violence in Russia and gave rise to the Bolsheviks who established the Soviet Union.

Many historians believe that the shortcomings of the 1905 revolution led to the revolutions of 1917. In 1917, Russia was directly involved in the First World War, fighting against Germany on the Eastern front. The war was devastating for the Russian people which led to a massive economic downturn. The food shortages and increased work time increased the workers' hatred towards the government. This led to the February revolution and the provisional government was formed which failed to improve the degrading situation and did not put an end to the war. During this time, the Russian General Lavr Kornilov attempted a coup against the provisional government headed by Alexander Kerensky. Kerensky successfully thwarted the coup with the help of Bolshevik assistance. But this led to the Bolsheviks gaining more power in Russia. All the jailed Bolsheviks were freed from jails and a takeover of the government was being planned. With the promise of bread, peace and land, the Bolsheviks overthrew the provisional government.

An election was held to appreciate Marx’s view that a communist nation should have democratic characteristics. The results of the election indicated that the Bolsheviks had lost to the more popular Socialist Revolutionary Party. Since no one cares about Marx’s principles, the Bolsheviks did not accept the results which led to the Russian Civil War lasting till 1923. The revolution led to the establishment of the USSR and further revolutions in countries such as China and Vietnam.

“Smile, the curve that makes everything straight.”
- Suprabha Thami - 23043, Grade ... 29 October, 2021

Smile, nowadays, basically means a facial expression in which the eyes brighten and the corners of the mouth curve slightly upward. Smile may be considered as a curve formed by corners of the mouth, but it's more than just any of that. Smile can be rather described as the expression of relief, happiness, amusement or kind acts. A smile cannot be formed all the time but it comes to us like a frequent visiting guest that can be said as an enjoyable rather than annoying guest.

Smiling not only offers a mood boost but helps our bodies release cortisol and endorphins that provide numerous health benefits. Smiling helps in reducing our blood pressure, stress and pain. Not only that but smiling also helps in increasing our immune system. Smiling is more attractive than wearing make-up and this is not just a saying but it's true, don’t believe it, try it yourself. With that, smiling is also contagious. Don’t believe this too? Try giving a smile to a person with no smile. Smiling helps you extend your lifespan and increases positivity.

Smiling may be natural and regular for some but for others it may not be as natural and regular. Smiling can help you feel at ease when you get it from someone at a new place or environment. It can give the person who performs it a certain air of confidence that not many facial expressions can. And an air of confidence can travel a long way, in this busy fast-paced world. Studies have found that smiling people are viewed as more attractive, due to the fact that they look healthier and therefore younger. And it may seem like a strange comparison but a grin can be associated with generosity too, which can be quite rare in these modern times.

Whether you call it a grin, smirk or smile, there’s no denying the feel-good power of this happy facial expression. We are born with the ability to smile, yet as we age, we smile less often. Why do you think people smile less as they age? Well, as we age, our problems and our responsibilities also increase. But thinking about it again, if we concentrate on our problems it’ll just get deeper and bigger but if we concentrate on the opportunities and solving the problems you’ll definitely find a solution. And to do that you’ll definitely have to be positive. So, we only have one life, why waste it thinking about our
problems and only making it bigger. Let's relax and smile to increase positivity to make our lives better and healthier.

Every little thing and everyone who makes you smile or tries to make you smile, don’t hesitate, just let your mouth form a smile, which makes you more attractive and approachable. Why don’t you start your day with a smile and say that it’s gonna be alright and move on and you will definitely start living a happy and positive life.

- Aashrab Khanal - 22001, Grade ... 22 October, 2021

- Tatsam Gautam - 23045, Grade ... 22 October, 2021
