Drug Abuse
- Sheetal Mulmi - 24036, Grade ... 13 December, 2022

Drug abuse is a societal problem that has destroyed many lives and is slowly spreading in our surrounding society to destroy more. Drugs have negative psychological and physical effects on users. Around the world, young people have been the ones who are mostly impacted by it.
Drugs are not completely bad substances as they are used in many fields of health to cure certain diseases and if used in a proper manner they can save many lives. So in modern times, the easy accessibility of most things has made life comfortable. Yet, like the two sides of the same coin it has also invited many challenges.
One of the problems afflicting most nations of the world is drug abuse. It is a social evil which can destroy the future of a society. It can make it weak and hollow as it gradually and slowly decreases the quality of human resources of a country.
Today, there is an alarming increase of drug abuse among school and college students. Drugs such as cocaine, heroine, LSD, crack, and among the milder ones like marijuana and shrooms are taken for their energizing and relaxing qualities as they help the user to escape the harsh reality that they are probably facing; nevertheless, sometimes drugs are even taken for the purpose of fun and enjoyment. But not realizing that this misadventure can mislead them to addiction- a trap from which it is difficult to get out.
Initially, these drugs may give you kicks but ultimately become a threat to the addict’s life. Addiction to drugs of any kind even to some extent, alcohol or pain killers, tranquillizers develop suicidal tendencies, affecting a person’s mind, moods, emotions and feelings. They are also responsible for human violence, aggression and crime. When a person is addicted to drugs, s/he slowly loses focus on her/his goal. A person needs drugs to  constantly keep her/himself away from the pain. Being addicted to drugs may also mean financial loss as this habit comes with a high price. A person will lose everything in his life but will not be able to free her/himself from drugs if he lacks the will to.
A person can become pathetic because of the influence of drugs; s/he might be unable to control her/his thoughts and actions. Physical and mental harm caused to them is irreparable, as breaking this habit requires a lot of determination, courage and patience. The process of coming out of it is extremely painful as it involves frequent pain. Addicts cannot function as normal members of the society; they neglect and abuse their families who also are traumatized. Not only this, it is one of the causes for encouraging crime.
This menace of drugs can be avoided by educating children at home and in schools about drugs. They need to be made aware of the ill effects of drugs so that they can make the right  decisions to avoid this problem. It is common knowledge that very often young children get into this habit because of the influence of their friends and the desire to become a part of the so-called fashionable, liberal and modern society. Thus, the youth society has to be told to make the right choices which falls down to the responsibilities of parents and schools to lay a strong foundation of moral character and discipline.

- Yojana Gautam - 23068, Grade ... 13 December, 2022

- Swodhin Bhandari - 24048, Gra ... 12 December, 2022

Horoscope
- Grishma Upreti - 23052, Grade ... 12 December, 2022

The positions of the sun, the moon, the planets, sensitive angles at the time of an event, such as the moment of a person's birth, and other astrological aspects are depicted in an astrological chart or diagram known as horoscope. The Greek terms ōra and scopus, mean ‘time’ and ‘observer’ respectively, and they are the sources of the English word, ‘horoscope.’ It is the foundation of the horoscopic traditions of astrology and is employed as a kind of divination regarding occurrences related to the moment in time that it symbolises. Newspapers, both online and in print frequently include horoscope articles.

The word ‘horoscope’ is used in common parlance to refer to an astrologer's interpretation, which is typically based on a solar system of sun sign astrology, strictly based on the sun's position at the time of our birth; or it is solely based on the calendar significance of an event, as in Chinese astrology. In particular, many periodicals and newspapers publish prognostic columns that are purportedly based on celestial influences in relation to the zodiacal placement of the sun on the person's birth month. Birth charts, known as kundali in Hindu astrology, are said to be based on the motion of the stars and the moon. When a person's kundali is verified, auspicious events and rituals are initiated, including marriages where the boy and the girl's birth charts match.

No scientific studies have ever been conducted to validate astrological predictions, and the methods used to develop interpretations are pseudo-scientific. The transmission of the alleged link between a person's birth and the location of the stars in the sky cannot be explained by any known interaction in the context of modern science. In all of the studies that have been conducted, keeping strict methods that include a control group and complete blinding between experimenters and subjects, horoscopes have not been found to have any influence beyond random chances. Furthermore, research on the Forer or Barnum effect has shown that personality profiles and forecasts may be made sufficiently all-encompassing to please the majority of people in a huge audience.

Movie Review: The Pianist
- Suyog Karki - 24073, Grade XI ... 09 December, 2022

Cast: Adrien Brody, Emilia Fox
Director:Roman Polanski
Studio: Focus Features
Genre: History, War, Drama

The Pianist is an Oscar-winning 2002 film. The film was shot in Poland, and also in Prague and in a German studio. The Pianist is about a young Jewish musician living in Warsaw who struggles to understand the Nazi invasion of his nation, the creation of the Warsaw Ghetto, and the madness that led to the Holocaust. THE PIANIST is a true story of Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody ) who was playing Chopin on a Warsaw radio station when the first German bombs fell; although the technicians run for cover, he keeps playing until a blast shatters the window of the studio, then the Jewish pianist in Poland is caught by the Nazis during World War II. Jews were imprisoned in a Ghetto and later transported to concentration camps after the Nazis seize Poland. There is a graphic violence: Men and women are shot in the head for little to no reason, a man in a wheelchair is tossed off a balcony, a man lying injured in the road is run over by a tank, wartime violence of machine-gun battles, bombed-out cities, explosions, and casualties. The movie is not too long, vivid, and there are certain unbearable emotional human moments that are its most effective scenes. The city's Jews were forced to give up their possessions and move to the Warsaw Ghetto. The pianist however escapes for a day and walks through the bright flower stalls in the crowded market outside the Ghetto. At a time when the violence committed by the Nazis against the Jews appear unforgivable, a German soldier who enjoys music shows kindness to the pianist while Jewish victims prey on one another. The closing scenes of the movie involve Szpilman's confrontation with a German captain named Wilm Hosenfeld who finds his hiding place by accident. The movie ends on the perfect bittersweet note – life and hope have returned, but no aspect of the future will remain untouched by the past.

The Pianist is not a drama, therefore it resists the need to intensify the tension or the emotion; rather, it is the pianist's narrative through his eyes of what he witnessed and what happened to him. When all the people he cared about died, Polanski remarked that his survival was not an achievement. He also stated that his mother's death in the gas chambers was still so painful that only his death would bring him closure. The Pianist is an intense movie and I think that it is a must watch for high school kids and above.

In my opinion, I would say this is one of the most powerful movies about war and the resilience of the human spirit ever made. The movie wants to inspire thought and discussion on the extremes of good and evil in humanity.

- Yojana Gautam - 23068, Grade ... 09 December, 2022

- Siddika Dahal - 24071, Grade ... 08 December, 2022

Importance of Sports
- Utsav Gautam - 23048, Grade X ... 08 December, 2022

Sports play a significant role in a country's culture. It is crucial as a form of recreation in addition to keeping you healthy and fit. Unfortunately, the trend in our nation is to only pay attention to the academic realm. In the same way that we must water a tree’s roots in order for it to flourish, we must instil the idea of sports in children at an early age, or in schools, in order to develop athletes who could represent their country. We are overlooking the important role that sports play in providing a comprehensive education.

Children’s interaction with nature is deteriorating with time. When I was younger, it was only natural for me to primarily spend my time. But nowadays, most children’s lives are spent in restricted situations. It's unfortunate that they will never experience the fun we have had outside. Playing sports has several advantages since it promotes healthy mental development. It teaches life lessons to children including cooperation, leadership, tolerance, and social graces. It fosters self-assurance, self-control, and playing within the rules. It teaches life skills and also helps in decision making.

Children who are physically active have better physical health and have greater stamina than children who spend most of their time inside. Playing outside promotes blood flow to the brain, which stimulates neurotransmitters and improves learning and attention span. They become exhausted from the physical activities, which cause them to become hungry. They then eat enough food promptly and go asleep at night. They will carry on with these positive behaviours for the rest of their lives. Outdoor activities prevent health issues including heart disease and obesity in later life. It is a simple yet effective means of better life. Therefore, it becomes even more crucial to reform the way schools see sports. It ought to be a required activity.

- Sanjay Puri - 23058, Grade XI ... 07 December, 2022

“44 Days in Hell”- A True Crime Story
- Himani Bhattarai - 24021, Gra ... 07 December, 2022

Junko Furuta was a highschool student studying in Misato, in the Saitama prefecture of Japan. She was a 16 year old girl who was brutally tortured and murdered by a group of boys. She was raped and tortured for 44 days before she died; this is why her story is named “44 days in Hell”.

A boy named Hiroshi Miyano had a crush on Junko; one day he decided to confess his feelings. But Junko rejected his confession as she did not want any distraction and wanted to solely focus on her studies. This made Miyano feel humiliated: Soon after this incident, Junko was kidnapped by a group of four teens (Hiroshi Miyano, Shinji Minato, Jō Ogura and Yusushi Watanabe). They then raped her. After that, they took her to Minato Nobuharu’s house where she was introduced to Minato’s parents as his girlfriend. After a few days her parents informed the police about her going missing. The boys forced her to call her parents and tell them that she was fine and just wanted a break from her studies so she was at her friend’s house. Her parents seemed to be convinced by this. She kept on getting raped by the boys for days. Not only this, she was used as a punching bag; she was beaten brutally by the boys. Sharp objects were used on her body. The guys even urinated on her. They used to throw huge dumbbells on her stomach time and again. This completely destroyed her internal organs. Despite this, they continued to rape and torture her. Soon her health became really critical. She couldn't stand up. One day the boys were out and Junko was alone there. There was a phone nearby. She managed to call 911 but before they could pick up the call the boys were back. Seeing this, they got very angry. They burnt her body parts with matchsticks and sexually abused her. They tortured her physically and mentally. Junko even begged them to kill her at once instead of giving all this torture. But they did not stop. Her  health became worse. Various objects like skewers, needles and other sharp and heavy objects were forced into her vagina. They even burnt her eyelids with hot wax; and finally after 44 days of constant torture, the boys burnt her alive. They spilled lighter fluid on her body and burnt her alive. Her health was already very critical so the fire incident killed her. When the boys realized Junko was dead, they dumped her body in a 55 gallon drum, filled with concrete and dropped it on a cement loaded truck in Koto tokyo.

The four teens were arrested and punished two weeks later on a separate gangrape charge. They were juveniles so their punishments were comparatively less than adults. They are roaming freely even today. Many books were written by authors inspired by this case. This incident can be considered as the most inhuman and brutal murder and torture case in humanity.

Musical Facts
- Anshu Niroula - 23009, Grade ... 06 December, 2022

“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” -Plato

What is music? Music plays a very crucial part of several different moments in human life. Music has the qualities of making us happy and healing us at the same time… Music is everywhere around us, all we have to do is listen…

Here, I’ve listed some of the mind boggling facts on music; let’s enjoy it together:

Elvis Presley was once told that he lacked talent. He’s still the best-selling solo artist in the world.

There are 8 notes in music and 5 kinds of musical instruments.

‘Metallica’ is the first and only band to have played on all the 7 continents.

The Greek philosopher Pythagorus is known as the creator of music.

The British Navy uses Britney Spears’ songs to scare off pirates.

None of the members of The Beatles could read or write music.

Music is physically good for your heart as well as the brain.

Heavy metal and classical music fans seem to have similar personality traits.

The two musicians with the greatest vocal range were both metal singers: Corey Taylor and Mike Patton.

It is said that ‘Black Sabbath’ invented heavy metal in the late 1960s.

Music (classical in particular) helps the plants to grow faster.

In “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Freddie Mercury plays on the same piano used by Paul McCartney in “Hey Jude”.
