- Shreejal Khatri - 2022024, Gr ... 05 October, 2020

Normalizing Menstruation In The World
- Niharika Shrestha - 2022022, ... 04 October, 2020

Menstrual blood is the only source of blood that is not traumatically induced. Yet in modern society, this is the most hidden blood, the one so rarely spoken of and almost never seen, except privately by women.

                                                                            -Judy Grahn

What is menstruation? Menstruation is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of a woman’s monthly cycle. At some point during puberty, blood comes out of your vagina, and that’s your first period. Most people get their first period between the ages of 12 and 14, but some people get them earlier or later than that. Menstruation occurs in cycles. The ovaries prepare an egg for release and the womb prepares a lining to nourish the egg if it is fertilized. When the egg is not fertilized, the lining of the womb is shed and a woman gets her period. The typical length of time between the first days of the next is 21 to 45 days in young women, and 21 to 31 days in adults (an average of 28 days). Bleeding usually lasts around 2 to 7 days. Menstruation stops occurring after menopause, which usually occurs between 45 and 55 years of age. Periods also stop during pregnancy and typically do not resume during the initial months of breastfeeding.

Why is it stigmatized all around the world? Menstruation is a natural process, but it is still highly stigmatized in many countries. A lack of information about menstruation leads to these misconceptions and discrimination and compels girls to miss out on their normal childhood experiences and activities. It is a topic that people are usually uncomfortable talking about and is typically a topic that is only discussed behind closed doors. This is because cultures all over the world have developed detrimental concepts and beliefs about menstruation. It’s clear the way we talk about menstruation, the concept of it is slow to change because menstrual taboos are ingrained in our cultures, beliefs, and histories deep down. Because of the taboos surrounding menstruation in many parts of the world, there is a significant lack of health education resources available to people about the menstrual cycles. It is this lack of knowledge that fuels myths that ostracize and humiliate women during their monthly cycles. Therefore, the stigma of menstruation is perpetrated by cultural taboos, discrimination, and lack of education, silence, and period poverty.

How are women treated during their menstruation? From ceremonies, parties to menstruation huts, women are treated very differently around the world. Women are considered impure and, thus restricted from entering the kitchen, temple, touching the Holy basil, pickles, etc. In many cultures, menstruating women are not allowed to bathe or wash her during the first three days of her period. Talking about our country Nepal, Chhaupadi is such malpractice that still exists in Nepal that violated women’s and girls’ sexual and reproductive health rights. Not only in Nepal, many women in Venezuela, are also forced to sleep in huts during menstruation. In rural Ghana, menstruating women are forbidden from entering a house with a man or cooking food.  In addition, in Kenya, studies have shown that girls will miss an average of four days of school each month adding up to about 20% of the school year.

Let’s Normalize Menstruation: Women face discrimination, harassment, and are looked down upon because of menstruation, as it is seen as a form of weakness rather than a necessary biological function.  Adolescent girls need the support of their governments to provide adequate infrastructures, access to affordable sanitary products, and gender equity for them to manage their periods. But to establish sustainable social change, education is key. All girls and boys must be educated about menstruation and reproductive health to empower them to talk comfortably and candidly about periods and sexual health. This can be done by educating, promoting women empowerment, providing expanded resources, and encouraging candid conversations surrounding women’s health, menstruation may one day no longer be a taboo but will be celebrated for the natural experience that it is.

- Ashraya Banskota - 21104, Gra ... 04 October, 2020

Cancel Culture And Its Toxicity
- Manit Bhattarai - 21112, Grad ... 01 October, 2020

If you’ve been living on the internet for a while, I’m sure you’ve heard about artists, influencers, shows /show hosts, brands, entertainers, or some sort of celebrity, in general, getting “canceled”. For those unaware, cancel culture is a phenomenon of withdrawing support from companies or celebrities after they’ve done something considered offensive or questionable usually leading them to the end of their career. Cancel culture began around 2014/15 but has been really popping off for the past couple of years.

Twitter is basically a place where things get political and out of hand. When you voice your opinion on twitter, depending on whether the majority of people agree with you or are against you, your tweet will either blow up and get a lot of support from others or get so much hate you would want to shut down your account forever. This is also the place where cancel culture spreads and truly gets out of hand. I won’t deny that there have been some good events due to this culture. For example, #OscarsSoWhite trend, which brought up the topic that Oscar wasn’t diverse enough, and the majority of awards only went to straight white people. This trend expanded as a call for greater inclusion of marginalized groups in all aspects of filmmaking. Twitter also helped elevate the complaints about sexual assault, sexism, and unfair treatment of women during the #MeToo movement.

All that being said, the strength of canceled culture can ravage lives and ruin careers. There have been cases when people see hashtags going around saying cancel this person or cancel that show and just join in on them without thinking for themselves because twitter or the internet, in general, has created such a sheep-like mindset that people can’t even voice their own opinions anymore. Due to which people just join in on the popular trend whether it’s right or wrong. Another thing I don’t like about this trend is when people dig up someone’s post from 10 years ago when they did something wrong and use that to cancel the person. Shane Dawson, a YouTuber who recently got canceled for this very reason. Shane has made some super edgy content in his past like joking about pedophilia, zoophilia, and somewhat racist content in the past. Though it was kind of obvious he was playing an offensive character that gained people’s attention and he wanted to keep growing in popularity by riding that wave, people got very angry recently and canceled Shane. Though I can see why people are angry and they have the total right to be so, why bring it up now? If they were talking about this back when it

actually happened, I am sure no one would have had any problem with it. Shane has grown a lot as a person and he had recently started making documentary-type videos which amassed a ton of views and likes, which means people really enjoyed it. So, I don’t understand why people are trying so hard to end his career instead of making him take accountability for his past actions and try to look at him from a new and improved perspective. Another case, with a recent movie on Netflix ‘cuties’, which by the way they advertised it, seemed like it was aimed towards pedophiles, which is absolutely disgusting and Netflix didn’t even take accountability for their actions. So, I can definitely see why people are mad but going as far as to cancel Netflix completely? It just doesn’t seem right to me. The man at the top of Netflix should be held accountable for the company’s misconduct but canceling the entire platform is just a toxic behavior. People are not thinking how many people have jobs at Netflix and canceling the entire company means a huge amount of people going unemployed. But it seems people are too blind to see that. Also not to mention all the other great shows on the platform getting canceled as well.

All that said, is canceling culture toxic? Definitely. But can we make proper use of it if done well? Definitely as well. People need to be more open-minded about certain things and try to think things through with a proper mindset which will benefit the community and decrease the amount of toxicity on the internet.

- Aashutosh Pudasaini - 2022002 ... 01 October, 2020

Value Of Games And Sports
- Princy Jaiswal - 21116, Grade ... 30 September, 2020

Nobody can deny that games are a part of life. Life itself is a game and this world is a big playground. We have to play the game of life with all our energy and courage. To play the game of life well, we have to learn to be good players. There are different kinds of games and sports; there are indoor games like cards, chess, ludo, etc. and outdoor games like Hockey, Football, Volleyball, Cricket, Tennis, etc. are the more common ones. Games and sports are necessary and useful for all. They are especially useful for the students who must have a balanced development of the body as well as the mind. Games and sports contribute to the all-round development of personality and develop such qualities as help in the formation of a noble character. Games play an important part in life. Education is incomplete without games. Games are necessary to keep the body fit and trim. We feel happier in the playground than we do in a classroom. While playing in the playground we feel happier because we forget the homework and the scolding of the teachers.

Games teach us the lesson of discipline, teamwork, patience, and punctuality in the playground; the players obey the captain and follow the rules of the games. Games also teach us that we should play a game for the game’s sake, not for victory or defeat. If a person is physically fit, he is also mentally fit and healthy. There is always a sound mind in a sound body. A healthy person is always hopeful and cheerful. On the other hand, an unhealthy person leads a painful and miserable life. Life becomes a burden for them. Games and sports also produce a sense of equality, co-operation, and friendship. All those qualities, which we get from the playground, help us to face the struggle of life.

Today, games and sports have assumed great importance. Sportsmen and players have started choosing sports and games as their career. It is a compulsory subject in schools in most of the states in the country. INGO’s are giving special grants to their best sportsmen and players. Newspapers and periodicals carry special sections for sports news from all corners of the world. Matches played at the national or international level are relayed over the radio network. Sportsmen are certainly the backbone of any nation. They certainly deserve a place of pride and honor in any country.

- Niharika Shrestha - 2022022, ... 30 September, 2020

Would The World Be A Better Place Without Religion?
- Shritika Pokhrel - 21123, Gra ... 29 September, 2020

What would happen if there was no religion in the world? If all people were in the same position, maybe? There will be no war, no destruction, and of course no problems. Many people think that the cause of wars and problems not only in the present but also throughout history is because of religion. If there hadn't been any religion, there wouldn’t have been any wars. To pin out their points, they give examples of many social problems like slavery, discrimination which might happen because of religion.

Many atheists and skeptics believe that religion should be discarded. But is religion really a problem for the world? Would the world be really a better place without religion? It is true that from the time of our ancestors to this generation, many social problems happened in the name of religion. However, I don’t think the major problem is religion. The major problem is the thinking way of people and the sinful act they do in the name of religion. This has nothing to do with religion. Humans are the ones who use religion to do sinful works.

Let us suppose for a moment that religion doesn’t exist, will the war, violence really disappear from society? Will the person really start loving each other without discriminating against people in the name of their body color? Will the hatred, lying, stealing really stop if religion doesn’t exist? Well, I don’t think so because these sorts of activities are the results of people’s thinking capacity; the way they think.

Religion is something that gives the identity of people. Rather, I will say it is the way of life. It teaches us to devote ourselves in front of nature. Every religion has its own identity but the common thing they all have is to love nature and find inner peace. And I think that’s the only thing that religion teaches us is to love yourself and every organism present in the world. But, we human beings, in the name of religion started attacking one another for being superior.

Having a different religion doesn’t mean that some are inferior and some are superior. It simply means that you have your own identity, your own ethics- that you have to protect at any cost. To make the world a better place, you need not follow obsolete religion. Rather than that, you can just change your way of thinking. It will be more than enough for making the world a better place.

Causes And Effects Of Cheating In School
- Benit Shrestha - 21105, Grade ... 28 September, 2020

Growing up, have you ever cheated, even by a small fraction, to get that perfect A+ grade? It is most likely that some of us have done this and felt no regret whatsoever. Even though cheating is discouraged and prohibited, some students always find a way around to make things easier for themselves, without any concern for the rules and regulations. Cheating at academics is sure to follow you throughout your professional career, causing all sorts of problems.

First and foremost, if you are cheating it probably means you don’t have a clear grasp of the topic or subject at hand. Copying from others may help you face the present situation without any issues but; in the long run, when your knowledge and skills are required for a practical purpose you will be left helpless. For instance, every now and then we hear news about quacks with fake degrees who are endangering the well-being not just of patients but of the public as well. Those people will not only face legal prosecution but they will also lose all merit in their professional lives too. Ultimately, cheating at school will become an occupational hazard, that comes with a set of severe consequences.

As per a 2010 survey done by a group of students studying psychology, people who have a tendency to cheat in school are found involved in fraudulent acts, scams and scandals. Dishonesty and improper conduct at the academic level are sure to impact decision making and innovation while applying for employment. More or less, if you prefer to cheat your way out of a job, chances are you will end up being a morally corrupt and socially dysfunctional individual.

Without any social reputation and prestige to hold, such people end up being social outcasts. Inevitably, the dependency on cheating to run one’s livelihood will cause a great deal of problems as our life progresses.

Lastly, cheating at school work will, obviously, cause you trouble in school. Most academic institutions have a low tolerance policy for plagiarism and cheating. So, in the event you are caught cheating, it will definitely leave a big, irremovable stain in your academic record. And this doesn’t just end here, any prospects and opportunities for further studies will be nullified and-or impacted badly. In addition to this, your whole performance as a student is viewed with a skeptical perspective, rendering all your work up until that point as well as all future endeavors prone to doubt and irrelevancy. And, without a credible and valid academic foundation, you will find yourself in-between odd jobs, with a failing career to mend.

In conclusion, cheating at the school level will gradually catch up with us in our short-lived lives and when that happens, we are bound to regret ever cheating in the first place. When we cheat, we may feel that we are cheating the system but in reality, the ones being cheated are ourselves. Ultimately, we are digging our own graves without knowing its purpose.

- Subham Regmi - 2022014, Grade ... 28 September, 2020
