- Aashraya Banskota - 21104, Gr ... 10 January, 2021

Change in the ocean
- Jubin Maharjan - 2022026, Gra ... 31 December, 2020

The ocean covers more than 70 percent of the surface of the Earth. Within the total, 97 percent of the Earth’s water can be found in the ocean. The ocean plays an important role in the climate of the Earth by helping in the regulation of heat and carbon dioxide levels. Ocean and climate change are interrelated. The Oceans are vulnerable to adverse impacts from the emission of greenhouse gases. Climate change can have huge effects on the ocean like water temperature changes, rise in the ocean water level, increase levels of ocean acidification, etc.

The ocean plays an important role in sustaining lives in the marine ecosystem.  Harmful human activities affect the condition of the Ocean and disturb the marine ecosystem. One of the harmful effects of human activities is acidification. Due to the large scale of industries around the world, the waste thrown into the ocean has increased. Because of this pH level of the ocean has dropped. This poses a huge threat to the ocean and the marine ecosystem as the ocean ecosystem becomes more polluted. The rise in ocean temperature is also another main concern. The increasing temperature of the ocean caused stratification which hinders important processes such as photosynthesis and also disrupts the marine food chain. Due to this many marine species will be forced to migrate or also lead to their extinction which also affects the lives of the people depending on the ocean for food. Global warming also brings huge changes to the ocean. It increases the sea level of the Earth. Due to global warming, glaciers and icebergs are melting and cause water to flow in the ocean, adding to the amount of seawater. This causes an increase in the salinity of aquifers and estuaries which threaten aquatic animals and plants that cannot tolerate high levels of salinity.

- Aashrab Khanal - 2022001, Gra ... 29 December, 2020

- Adhit Upadhyay - 22003, Grade ... 28 December, 2020

Suzuki Satoru
- Ansel Dhungana - 22018, Grade ... 27 December, 2020

Suzuki Satoru is the protagonist of the novel series Overlord. Overlord is a dark fantasy novel. Here, he is an undead that is similar to a skeleton with no flesh or skin. He has dull white bones and his eye sockets have red dots. He has a variety of clothes that he wears on a daily basis but his default battle gear remains the same. He has a red orb that floats in the stomach region. He wears a black robe over his body and head. He also has large shoulder pads that look like horns. Each of his ten fingers has a ring.

Suzuki was formerly from a dystopian future in a world set in 2138. It was a world where mega-corporations controlled everything. Education was made expensive so that only rich people could educate their children hence only their children could get high-paying jobs. His dad had died when Suzuki was very young and his mother had worked herself to death when he was in elementary school. Ever since then he had worked. Seeing dead children on his way to and from work was normal. He had no friends and family. The only thing he looked forward to after work was to play a virtual MMO game, using a chip implanted in his brain which everybody had, called Yggdrasil. He had made many friends in the game. They had gone on many adventures together as a guild and during their peak, they were ranked 9th among the world leaderboards. Their guild was named Ainz Ooal Gown and Suzuki was the guild master. There were conditions to be a member of the guild. They were:-

  • The in-game characters had to be of a heteromorphic race, which humanoid players got no penalties for killing.

  • The players had to be a functioning member of society.

Because of that most of his friends left the game due to work. He was alone yet he treasured the guild base and the NPCs that his friends made.

On the last day of the game, he had invited all the members for one last raid but only one player Herohero came. Since they couldn’t raid with just two players, they just chatted. Suzuki learned that Herohero had been overworking and wanted to rest. Although Suzuki wanted Herohero to remain with him till the server shut down, he reluctantly bade him farewell and waited for the server shutdown. Even after the server shutdown time had passed, he wasn’t forced to log out.

He then discovered that he and the guild base( Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick) both had been transported to a new fantasy world where magic exists. The NPCs made by his friends had come to life with their own souls and revered Ainz as a supreme being and the Overlord of Nazarick, a being who could do nothing wrong and his word was law. Their personalities and interactions with other NPCs matched that of the owners. This reminded Suzuki of his friends and not wanting to disappoint his friends’ children he adopts the role of a supreme overlord.

What is interesting and special about this character is not how he progresses as a character but how he affects the new world and the people in it. As soon as he came to the new world, he found out that the people of this world were way weaker than him and his NPCs yet he was very paranoid. Due to a series of misunderstandings, he acted as the overlord of Nazarick. The NPCs also assumed a speech given by him as a hint towards world domination. The NPCs worked hard for him to establish a country from which they could proceed to world domination. This causes humans and other beings in the new world to hate Suzuki. What Suzuki does is also not good. He lets most of the tasks be handled by NPCs and the NPCs are evil so they find the most sadistic ways to complete the missions assigned to them.

Suzuki Satoru is an interesting character and special to me because he is the villain of the story in a genre populated by Good Samaritan protagonists that do good to everybody. This is a break from other protagonists of the same genre.

Privacy on Sale
- Benit Shrestha - 21105, Grade ... 24 December, 2020

If you are a typical-functional individual acquainted with technology, you probably share photos, posts, and other media on the internet to share your happiness and opinions with friends and family. However, have you ever spared a second to ponder where all your data and the data of millions of active users on the web goes?  The Internet being a vast virtual domain where anyone can communicate with anyone under the right circumstances, the possibility of an accumulation of your personal data being auctioned off to the highest bidder is not unlikely in the slightest.

‘With over 640,000 new users joining the web on any given day’ (Our World in Data), the collection of user data and other information is increasing at an unstoppable rate. And, proportional to this user data theft and massive plot-holes in data protection have become more and more common in the present context. But, the idea of user privacy was open for debate, way back in the 2010s but even after a decade, nothing has improved. On the contrary, ‘online threats and data breaches have escalated 10-fold’ (Sahid). It is true that on a technological level, we have ascended far beyond what 2010 could offer, but the status of user privacy is evolving as well but backward. Not only people but massive corporations have been laid to waste due to data breaches and forced infiltration. However, it’s not just shady individuals like black-hat hackers that are responsible for the theft of our data, but well-known companies, and even the government is suspected of tracking user web activity to better insight on public ideas and opinions, even if that means violating user privacy.

However, rather than whining about our data being stolen and used for questionable things, we must find the root cause of this, right?  But the truth is much bitter than we can accept. The whole issue of violation in privacy starts by a click, like literally. All the things we agree to, while setting up our devices or accessing something on the web, or just giving some sort of permission to apps or websites marks the beginning of our privacy being compromised. ‘About eight-in-ten Americans say they have to agree to privacy policies at least once a month’ (Auxier), this simply goes to show that to access the “free” and vast resources the internet has to offer, we have to agree to give up our privacy and secrecy in a way. This sure sounds like a deal with the devil, unparalleled access to anything and everything the web has to offer for the fair price of one’s privacy. But the violation of user data doesn’t stop here, under the cloaked excuse of ‘personalized user experience’ massive technology giants like Google themselves not only breach our privacy but also auction them off to “data brokers'', who further sell that to other companies. But why go to such lengths to busy some information on someone from a crowd of hundreds of thousands of people. The reason behind this is companies, especially ones operating online consider the whole of the internet an open ground for business, hence it is ‘quite handy for companies to increase revenue by displaying personalized Ads and products based on likes and dislikes of users’ (Ivana). And These are only the basics of the extent of how our personal data is constantly being misused.

In addition to this, cyber threats like hacking, phishing, online fraud, and so on fall under the base idea of privacy violation. Our virtualized data present on the internet is protected by nothing more than a series of code and not a physical material like security safe, so individuals like hackers can easily dig up information on our finances, family, and what not just by breaking the thin barrier of code. Under the guise of being more secure than ever, we are actually putting our information whether it be personal or professional at risk of getting stolen more easily and unknowingly. The data taken forcibly can be used to ‘make virtual and possibly erroneous versions of [users]’ (Melendez and Pasternack). Making you suspects and convicts for heinous crimes you never committed and things you never did. Ultimately just being present on the internet is a huge issue in itself.

If just attempting to utilize the internet comes at such a hefty cost, we should just disconnect our lives from the web and live a life with less virtual components like in the olden days. But the real question here is, how much of resorting to the old lifestyle before technology took over, is possible let alone practical? However, the problems the internet creates are ironically solved by the internet itself. As mentioned before, we are responsible for the breach of our own privacy so if we act on the root cause of the issue itself, we might be able to tackle it in one way or another. Limiting the things we agree to while surfing the web as well as, erasing tracks of our web activity may come as useful for combating data theft. However, the best solution is to minimize the use of the internet, the more we use it the more our web activity starts becoming a personalized user diary. Hence, ‘keeping a low profile on the web might save us the hassle of our privacy being compromised and breached’.

To conclude everything in one go, the internet isn’t the best or the most secure place to be sharing your information blindly. Every individual is responsible for their own safety while surfing the internet and one misclick may just cause us a great deal of trouble. Ultimately, there’s a high chance that the privacy we adore so much is likely being smuggled to brokers right under our nose, and carrying out necessary measures as well as abandoning the use of the internet is the best possible way of avoiding the Sale of our own Privacy.
