Book review: Up from slavery
- Ansel Dhungana - 2022018, Gra ... 05 April, 2021

Up from slavery is an autobiography of Booker T. Washington. In the book, he wrote about his life after freedom and the life of the whole of the black race. He wrote about the difficulties that black people faced in America during the time.

Booker T. Washington was born a slave in Franklin County, Virginia. He lived with his mother and his siblings on the plantation. On the plantation, he did all sorts of work like hauling sacks to and from the plantation and attending to the daughters of his master. There were many slaves in the plantations that worked together. They lived in cabins that did not have anything to cover the ground, neither did the slaves have beds to sleep in. The slave had an information network during the antebellum period through which they got to know how the war was going. When the war was almost over and the north had almost won, the slaves would stay up late into the night and talk excitedly about what they would do when they were free. Here, Washington writes that although the slaves had no freedom and were kept in a bad condition, they still had a sense of loyalty towards their masters. If ordered to guard their masters, they would gladly do so and the attackers would have to go past the dead bodies of the slaves before they could lay a hand on their masters.

All the slaves had gathered around the house of their master when their freedom was announced. All the members of the family of their master were present. The family of the master had a look of pensiveness like they were getting separated from a close member of the family or a close friend. While the slaves were also sad about getting separated from their masters whom they had served for most of their lives, that feeling was dominated by the elation of finally getting freedom.

Once they were free, Washington and his siblings traveled with their mother to Malden, West Virginia to meet with their father.  In Malden, he worked as a coal miner in a coal mine to help support his family. Washington had always wanted to read and write so he started learning to do so by scrounging books. Shortly after a school was opened there were people of all ages to study. But since his father had recognized his ability to earn money, Washington was made to work at the coal mine. He protested this decision of his father. They came to an agreement that he would wake up early in the morning and work in the coal mine until school started. And that he would also work after school ended. Washington did so for some time. Once while he was working at the coal mine he heard of a school in Hamilton where black people could study. Hearing that he made a decision that he would go to study at Hampton. To go to Hampton he had to work very hard to secure his travel expenses.    We can understand that Washington had to struggle in his early days to secure enough money for his family and himself. He also had to work hard to get an education. When he reached Hampton University, he had no money with which he could pay the board expenses. Thus, he had to work as a janitor in the university to compensate for his lack of money.

In Hampton, he met a man he respects the most, General Armstrong. General Armstrong was a great man of strong morals. He was a believer in true equality. He was also the person who recommended Washington to go to Alabama where Washington founded the Tuskegee Institute.

In the book, Washington writes that being a slave might have been an advantage to the black person over being born a white person because society expected the black person to fail which made overcoming the odds that much more satisfying. The hardships that people have faced in their life will help them overcome the challenges of the future. He also believes that cleanliness is of the utmost importance and teaches that to every one of his students. In fact, the student needs to own a toothbrush in order to get admitted to the Tuskegee Institute.

But, above all, Washington believes that there can only be progress when both the races live in harmony within the neighborhood, helping each other and being useful. He believes that a black person can be of equal importance to society as a white person the moment the black person can show his worth is equal to that of a white person. In the Atlanta Exposition, this is the very thing he talks about. He says to the people of the south, cast down the bucket where you are,He says that should white need a hand 16,000,000 hands would reach out to help.

Hence, the book deals with the situation of America post-civil-war and the situation of the slaves who became free. Washington also talks about his life, his thoughts on the future of America and also the stories of certain black people.

Air pollution In Nepal
- Safal Gautam - 22016, Grade X ... 04 April, 2021

Living in the Kathmandu valley has become very dangerous as we have been inhaling endless amounts of dust as we roam around the city. Currently, in the pandemic, most people started wearing masks while heading out of their house. But, this practice has also been decreasing as citizens of Nepal have started to walk around without wearing a mask.

Yesterday, on 26th March 2021, most parts of the country faced hazardous haze blankets as the wildfires in Nepal continue to spread. People roaming outside have been left with burning eye sensation and respiratory difficulty. According to reports, the yellow haze had entered many districts and cities from Makwanpur. More than 110 places in Nepal have been affected due to wildfire during this past week including Langtang National Park that caught fire yesterday morning.

The Kathmandu Valley, being just 32 kilometers away from Langtang National park could not let the air flow out due to it being a basin-shaped valley thus trapping the pollutants inside. Due to the smog and air pollution, visibility has been lowered to an unprecedented level. Many flights that were supposed to land in Nepal had to be diverted to India while some could barely land after being held in the air for almost an hour.

Statistics have shown that Kathmandu valley has been ranked as the most polluted city having a total pollution level of 294 AQI Friday evening. Even before, on January 4, 2021, Kathmandu had reached a shocking level of 500 AQI as reported by the American Embassy in Kathmandu. Some people have recorded the Air Quality Index to have reached a shocking level of 632 at 3 PM during Friday, almost 20 times more hazardous than the air WHO has said is safe to breathe.

The air quality was not only bad due to the smoke omitted from the wildfires but due to industrial and vehicular gas emissions as well as the sand dust blowing from Arabian and Indian Deserts this past week. The MoHP has strictly warned the citizens to wear masks when going outside so as not to degrade their health conditions.

- Manisha Gurung - 22030, Grade ... 28 March, 2021

Electronic Cigarettes
- Benit Shrestha - 21105, Grade ... 28 March, 2021

Fletcher Knebel once said: “Smoking is the leading cause of statistics”. That was a gesture about how smoking has a large but bad effect on humans' life to the degree that researching it had developed biostatistics and medical research. Smoking is known to cause cancer especially lung cancer as it contains a complex mixture of over 4000 chemicals and over 30 of these are known or suspected contributors to the health hazards of smoking. So, smoke companies invented electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes to avoid lung cancer risk and as a replacement to help people to quit smoking. However, there are many reasons why e-cigarettes should be banned.

First, e-cigarette aerosols contain harmful substances. For example, nicotine in e-cigarettes as well as classic cigarettes is a psychoactive substance responsible for the development of tolerance,  withdrawal symptoms, coronary heart diseases, and bronchial asthma. Another substance is diacetyl which is a chemical linked to serious lung disease. Also, it contains heavy metals such as nickel,  tin & lead, and cancer-causing chemicals & tiny products that reach deep into lungs. However, e cigarettes generally contain fewer harmful chemicals than smoke from burned tobacco products.

Second, e-cigarettes can cause unintended injuries because of defective e-cigarette batteries.  Those batteries have caused fires and explosions some of which have resulted in serious injuries. One accident was in May 2018 when “Wake D'Elia was at home using an electronic cigarette when  the device's battery malfunctioned and exploded, killing him instantly. He was 38” (Edwards,  2019). A study in 2018 said:'' From 2015 to 2017, there were an estimated 2035 e-cigarette  explosions and burn injuries presenting to US hospital emergency departments” (Matthew E  Rossheim, 2018). However, most explosions happened when e-cigarette batteries were being  charged.

Third, the e-cigarettes potential benefit is only helping addicted smoker people to quit  smoking. However, many scientists question this use. One study has stated that “The success rate of  quit attempts increased by 0.098% for every 1% increase in the prevalence of e-cigarette use by  smokers and e-cigarette use during a recent quit attempt, respectively. There was no clear evidence  for an association between e-cigarette use and rate of quit attempts” (Emma Beard, 2016). Another  study concluded that “Recent cigarette abstinence is negatively associated with e-cigarette use”  (Trevor Christensen, 2014). So, FDA has considered e-cigarettes as tobacco products regulating  their manufacture, trading and distribution processes.

Last, the availability and marketing of e-cigarettes attracts people especially teenagers and  youth to use e-cigarettes even if they don’t smoke. FDA reported that “more than 3 million middle  and high school students were current users of e-cigarettes in 2015, up from an estimated 2.46  million in 2014” (Tushar Singh, 2016) (René A Arrazola, 2015). FDA also reported: “In 2013- 2014, 81% of current youth e-cigarette users cited the availability of appealing flavors as the  primary reason for use” (Villanti AC, 2013-2014). So, e-cigarette have become a smoke product that  attracts nonsmokers to try it.

That concludes that e-cigarettes may be beneficial to smokers as it is less harmful than  classic smoke, but they are considered as harmful to nonsmokers as other tobacco products. Also,  people can be attracted to them and become dependent on them. Also, using these devices can make  quitting smoking harder. So, governments should act and ban the e-cigarettes manufacturing and  their advertisements that attract people to use it.

Did All The Dinosaurs Live Together At The Same Time ?
- Samyam Shrestha - 2022012, Gr ... 25 March, 2021

Dinosaurs were separated in accordance with geologic time. The age of dinosaurs started from the Triassic Period ( about 230 million years ago ) followed by Jurassic Period (about 201.3 million years ago - 145 million years ago ) and last came the Cretaceous Period (about 145.5 million years ago - 66 million years ago ). Many different species of dinosaurs lived during these periods. For example: During the Triassic period there was a dinosaur named Saltopus, those were extinct in the Jurassic period and the same goes for other dinosaurs. Their species went extinct during their time period.  As per the research shown, there used to be a supercontinent called Pangea at the beginning of the Triassic period. But due to some incident, the continent broke apart, and the dinosaurs scattered across the globe. During the process, many species of dinosaurs evolved in their own geographical region.

Triassic Period :

The Triassic period started and ended with a huge disaster wiping out almost 90% of the species. The remaining species repopulated the earth and evolved during the process. Ocean was filled with different species of living beings and air was fully dominated by Pterosaurs and other flying reptiles. Slowly dinosaurs started to evolve. Some dinosaurs that used to live in the Triassic period are Coelophysis, Pterosaurs, Plesiosaurs, etc.

Jurassic Period :

After the disaster, the Jurassic period started. Supercontinent Pangea was divided during this period. Mountains, hills, plain land started to form with high amounts of trees and plants. Dinosaurs during this period were huge. The earliest known bird, Archaeopteryx, also originated during this period. Brachiosaurus stood  85 feet tall and weighed 80 ton. The massive herbivores were equally matched with the biggest carnivores.

Cretaceous Period:

During this period, continents were moving in the same position as they are in the present day. Due to it, oceans expanded and caused certain changes in climatic conditions of the continents. New dinosaurs evolved who dominated the continents. Spinosaurus dominated the southern part whereas Tyrannosaurus rex dominated the northern part. Mammals evolved during this period. The ocean was dominated by large predators like the Megalodon, Mosasaurus. But, at the end of the time period, dinosaurs were wiped out by a huge natural disaster.

Dinosaurus derives from greek “deinos” which means “Terrible” or “Fearfully great” and “sauros” means “Lizard” or “Reptile”. They dominated the Mesozoic era and went extinct during the same era.

- Ashraya Banskota - 21104, Gra ... 24 March, 2021

Koe no Katachi: A silent voice
- Rakshit Dahal - 2022024, Grad ... 24 March, 2021

I never had the strong enthusiasm to watch any kind of animated movies until I watched “I want to eat your Pancreas” which was a movie strongly suggested by my group and I watched it until peer pressure. “ I want to eat your Pancreas” laid a strong impression on me on how far a movie can emotionally go and the other boy “your name “ made me realize how far a human’s mind can go. These two movies made me fall in love with animation and the emotion they carried. There’s no doubt that these movies were one of a kind but “Koe no Katachi” aka Silent voice was different. This movie focused on the school bully then on the victim's side. It was without a doubt one of the best movies I ever watched to date. The story plot was top notch and the way characters were displayed and the way they acted was too emotional for even a stoned cold heart to start throwing tears.

Here are some details of the movie. The movie was released in 2016 and still remains to be on the board of best animes ever made. The movie was produced by Kyoto animation which later had to go through a loss of their employees dying due to a fire caught in their workplace.
Some movies leave a deep impact on the way we think, the way we act, and the way we speak.  This movie made me feel an entirely new emotion, an emotion I never encountered before.

A  new realization hit me when I started watching anime movies. Animated movies had this capacity to tell a story in a whole new way and this same kind of energy would not have been the same while watching a physical and real movie. In the end Koe no Katachi really is a movie worth watching I must say.
