The Key to Making a Difference
- Aswin Siwakoti - 23014, Grade ... 29 July, 2022

We are living in a world where everything is changing every second. There are people who are making things change by harvesting their knowledge in a certain field or even coming up with something creative which is unusually different for the people and this is what they call making a difference. We live a static life where everything is almost the same every day and we seem uninterested in the things we do. Main reason behind this is being similar everyday. And the one major hindrance that people are unable to harvest their knowledge is due to the system of society or what we can call this is a trend which is spreading to every youth and adults out there, where they call themself a “nobody” without even trying. This is where the idea of making a difference comes in, assuming yourself as somebody who can give something that the world always longs for.

Making a difference basically means doing something different than that of others or breaking a stereotype. We all in one way or another want to make a difference. And making a difference is not that easy. It requires a lot of time, going beyond what you are and what the world is, and will definitely take everything you hold in your power. The major and first thing to do if you want to make a difference is to start where you are currently and reflect on your actions, track your outcomes, and be determined on the next steps you are going to take in order to build a different self than yesterday. The next thing which is important in order to make a difference is to never stop asking questions whether it requires questioning yourself or others. Question yourself if you are seeing no changes in your life and seek answers to what is stopping you from being a different person? Making a difference while listening and reading seems way easier but implementing it to our livelihood is tough and hard, so believe in yourself and do what you feel is right because results are based on our level of preparation, not on our level of expectations.

- Raghav Vaidya - 24030, Grade ... 29 July, 2022

Religion: A Guidance of Life
- Aarya Chhetry - 24005, Grade ... 26 July, 2022

Religion is the guide through which a human is given a method of their lifestyle. It is the very essence through which a life is given a meaning and it is actual a governing body which controls society, people and its behaviors. The origin of religion dates back to old times when prehistoric humans first discovered fear. When people didn’t understand nature and didn’t know how to control the resources of nature, they began to fear it.  To feel safe they started to pray and worship the things that they couldn’t comprehend. Thus, religion was born.
Religion is a very systematic way of controlling people, their thoughts, hopes, beliefs through the fear of god. In Hinduism, the caste system was introduced in the early pages of the Rig Veda where it states that people’s castes are based on the parts of Brahma. The Brahmans are said to be born through the mouth lord Brahma hence they are considered the highest likewise the castes born from the so called feet of Brahma became the untouchables. The vedas weren’t written by a single person and not in a single day, rather it was written in a long span of time through many Rishis and it is evident that they tangled with the originally passed down ideologies to benefit them and them only. Maybe the original ideology of the vedas was to give people a sense of meaning at a time when people were senseless of the purpose of their birth but this later changed into a very complicated and well thought out governing system where people were controlled in benefitting the upper castes. The people who understood the power of religion used it to benefit themselves and the people who were in the unknown were forced to be bottom feeders in the fear of god. One of the greatest examples of a religion being turned into business is Buddhism. The true essence of Buddhism is to serve for humanity not for an unknown god but the people turned the man who came for the salvation of humanity to a god. Buddhism states that rather than offering heavy offerings to a statue in the name of god, use those offerings to serve the needy yet we can get a look at the huge statues of Buddha, the gumbas and offerings made in his name.  The original Buddhism didn’t have gods, they were later added by the monks in order to counter the then growing popularity of  Hinduism. The stupas that are getting established now in the name of peace are just a decoy for the donations that go in the pockets of businessmen.
Religion was and is a business but without it a society won’t function. The biggest issues around the world are based on religion even on of the greatest genocide in history named the holocaust was also based on religion. Without religion people will go back to the prehistoric stone age where the basic goal of living would be to survive and reproduce. Every religion gives out a concept of god and serving that god and following the rules instituted by the god in their holy book when they don’t even realize that those books were written by humans to become powerful in this world where reality is stranger than fiction.

Romanticizing Mental illness
- Himani Bhattarai - 24008, Gra ... 22 July, 2022

Mental illness has become a really trendy topic these days. People are being vocal about mental illness and are learning to accept it. It has been less of a taboo in society now. Just because people romanticize mental illness does not mean it is out of existence. Being vocal about mental illness and romanticizing it are two different things. Being vocal about mental illness means talking about mental Sharing their experience in different media. People have started opening up about mental illness which have helped the victims overcome their fear and different problems related to mental illness . Romanticizing it is a completely different thing. It means viewing mental illness in a glamorous way.

Scrolling through social media, I have seen people post quotes like “ Life is so hard right now, I wanna kill myself”, “ School gives me depression”. I'm pretty sure most of us are familiar with this. People have not only normalised mental illness but they have learned to embrace it. Majority of teenagers have started romanticizing mental illness. It has also been labeled as “aesthetic”.Social media is responsible for this increment in the romanticization of mental illness. It allows youths to create a romanticized perception towards the idea of mental illness.  It presents mental illness in a depressing yet attractive way. Which is why most teenagers are attracted to the term “ anxiety”.  Anxiety, OCD, Depression, Suicide are some of the terms that I frequently see in social medias these days. I have seen various merchandise labeled as “anxiety”, “ sad vibes only”, and depressing quotes. People are wearing such clothes as a trend. Since, Mental illness is trending these days I dont think these merchandise are targeted toward people who actually suffer from mental illness. Would a person diagnosed from cancer wear a clothing piece labelled as cancer? No right? So, Why would a person suffering from mental illness wear and promote merchandise labeled as anxiety? Corporations are launching these merchandise because mental illness is trending in a hauntingly beautiful, aesthetic way. People are embracing mental illness and they want to be labeled as a person suffering from it just to be on trend despite being aware that there are people out there who are suffering from those problems and are facing difficulties to open up about their mental health.  At a certain point romanticizing mental health led to self injuries. People began taking pictures and posting sensitive posts about hurting themselves.

Romanticizing mental illness creates a negative impact on youths. Mainly on the people who are actually the victim of mental illness. They see people posting about mental illness without having much knowledge about it. They see people embracing problems which they never wished for. They see graphic images of self injury posted by people as a trend which builds insecurity inside them. Viewing mental illness in a glamorous and attractive way has nothing to do with awareness. It creates more and more problems for the patients of mental illness as it presents problems in a way that is not 100% true. Depression, Anxiety, OCD etc is a real problem and it mustn’t be viewed in a glamorous way. People must change their outlook about mental illness and raise awareness instead of romanticizing it.

ADDICTED TO VIDEO GAMES
- Aarnov Adhikari - 23003, Grad ... 21 July, 2022

Playing video games is a fun and relaxing way to unwind. They assist those who are lonely in making friends and joining a group. There are several examples of how kids with developmental problems are taught social skills and how to function in society. It aids in their overall growth and aids in the development of their brains. There is a drawback, too, in that excessive gaming can lead to addiction. We cannot go to this degree because it would be detrimental to everyone concerned.People frequently manage their time such a way that they go to either work or school, do what needs to be done, then return home and spend all of their time playing video games. They frequently consider this to be a good compromise. Not at all.

To split life in between the two is unhealthy. As a result, social isolation may develop and socialization skills may deteriorate. Additionally, this may lead to behavioral problems. Teenagers who spend their time in this way do not acquire the fundamental abilities needed to contribute to society and hold professions.Even the people who are married are impacted by this problem. There are several tales of spouses who work all day, then come home to play while the house or kids are neglected. As a result, one parent is left to carry the whole burden of the household, which is very stressful and difficult. Additionally, it may cause relationships to end.It is important to strike a balance so that people may spend time with their friends and family as well.

When someone spends hours playing video games, they don't have time for any physical activity like walking. It can result in incorrect posture, impaired vision, carpal tunnel syndrome, and discomfort and pains. In severe circumstances, it might result in neurological problems and migraines. Lack of movement can lead to obesity, cardiovascular disorders, and long-term postural problems. Strokes can also be caused by in-game rage.

After playing for so long, many gamers find it difficult to reintegrate into society. They frequently attempt to behave in the real world as they would in video games. They run the risk of hurting both themselves and others in this way. Like the event where a little child shot a stranger on the street in the hopes that he would turn into a zombie like characters in the game he was playing. This is a severe example of detachment from reality and confusion.

If too much time is spent playing intensive games, addiction can also cause paranoia and anxiety. Additionally, it may result in mental regression and a loss of social abilities.Fortunately, there are also treatment facilities for this addiction, allowing those who seek assistance to resume their normal lives. However, recovery does not always come through treatment, so individuals must be cautious and learn self-control when it comes to how much time is spent playing video games.

There still has to be control and regulation even if video games are a great way for someone to unwind, relax, and find amusement. The development of an addiction from excessive gaming can seriously impede a person's development and wellbeing. Video games are a tool that should be utilized for enjoyment or social interaction. If we permit this to become a way of life, it turns into a serious problem. Family life is also disrupted. Therefore, we must address this problem in order to prevent it from controlling people's lives and futures.
