I tell you a fiction based on real fact-
It’s a fake scenario witnessed by a man;
Welcoming the people giving my farewell speech,
Uneducated groupings all here to teach.
The show cancellation and notice of extension-
Complete rejection being center of attention;
People walking past as they gather to listen,
Questions ignored, answer people’s mentions.
Walking by the trees in the middle of a desert-
Searching for oasis right beside a river;
Green on my feet, I only view the sands,
Walked up the hill in straight plain land.
Please come inside walking out the backdoor-
Done the work early one you procrastinated for;
Walk a filthy loser- in hand you carry the trophy,
Surrounded by people, you seem so lonely.
An abandoned building filled with people-
On a snow filled land grows a tree of maple;
Clear is the sky, falls a raindrop on my hand,
These are all fake scenarios witnessed by a man.
The #notallmen movement has been going around for quite some time now, specifically, ever since the voices of women against the injustices done towards them have been raised comparatively over the last few years. The statement, ‘If not all men then why all women?’ suggests an assumption that all women are subject to a particular experience or circumstance that is not experienced by all men. The ‘not all men’ movement is a response to discussions around issues such as sexual harassment, assault, and gender-based violence, in which some men feel that they are being unfairly generalized as perpetrators. While it is understandable that some men may feel defensive or uncomfortable with the idea that their gender is associated with harmful behaviors, it is important to recognize that the ‘not all men’ response can be harmful and counterproductive in several ways.
The fan following of the movement deflects attention from the issue at hand. When someone responds to discussions of sexual harassment or assault by saying ‘not all men’, they are essentially redirecting the conversation away from the issue and towards themselves. This can be frustrating and even harmful for those who are trying to address a serious problem which may be personal experience or just an awareness programme. Similarly, in most cases, by saying ‘not all men’, people are essentially denying the reality of the problem. The fact is that sexual harassment and assault are pervasive issues that affect a large number of people, particularly women. Denying the reality of the problem only reinforces the harmful attitudes and behaviors that lead to it. But whether it is due to the fragile egos or the disbelief of men, the experiences of women in these aspects are usually dismissed by saying ‘not all men’. In these cases people do not understand the fact that by saying ‘not all men’ does not resolve the problem at hand. It does not address the problem and nor does it provide any solutions. Instead, it can be seen as a form of gaslighting or invalidation directed towards those trying to share experiences. Not only that, it also implies ignorance towards intersectionality. When someone says ‘not all men’, they are often ignoring the fact that issues like sexual harassment and assault are not just a gender issue, but also an issue of power, privilege, and intersectionality. For example, in the context of Nepal, Dalit women experience sexual harassment, assault and discrimination more vividly as well as differently then Bahun women.
In conclusion, while it's understandable that some men may feel defensive or uncomfortable with the idea that their gender is associated with harmful behaviors, it's important to recognize that the ‘not all men’ response can be harmful and counterproductive. Instead of denying the reality of the problem, we need to work together to address it and create a safer, more equitable society for all.
After the exam, we all headed to Bhandarkhal
With a few friends to unwind and let loose.
The sun was shining bright, and the birds singing,
It all seemed so calm, so peaceful.
But then, from a nearby tree, a monkey appeared,
Staring at me with its menacing eyes.
What was it thinking, what did it want?
I wondered, curious and a little scared.
The monkey jumped down and started to chase,
I ran for my life, screaming with all my might.
Other monkeys joined in, and soon it was a race.
Their claws and teeth flashing in the light.
I dodged, I ducked, and I zigzagged,
Trying to shake them off my trail.
But they were relentless and wouldn’t back off,
I was caught in a real-life monkey tale!
Days and nights went by, haunted by their faces,
The fear they’d instilled, unshakeable and true.
I couldn’t forget, couldn’t erase,
The terror that those monkeys put me through.
Now every time I see a monkey,
My heart skips a beat, my nerves all frayed.
Thanks to that day in Bhandarkhal,
Monkeys will forever make me afraid.
A dark, dull night,
With the visible light draped in gray-
The moon and the stars are to be hidden,
While the sky is bleak, dark and fray.
The air is still, heavy and dusty,
With a deep sense of unease-
As though time has frozen,
And it’s already waiting, if you please.
The trees, like tall shadowy guards,
Massive branches reaching out-
As if they're searching for a sign,
In this darkness all about.
The world is kept quiet and somber,
Silence is that which pervades-
Focused enough in the sound, you can almost hear the beating,
Of your own heart, as it fades.
Even in this darkness,
There's no sense of hope that's there-
Not a glimmer of a future,
Waiting, just beyond the glare.
If I were Apollo,
Would I have foreseen this future?
Or would I have gone with the flow?
As you question how I came to be-
I shudder to think where the story is heading to-
The story of the lonely prince who had his will seized.
Once there was a young prince who was born in the castle-
His mother was a princess but also a mighty scholar;
His father was a knight feared in all the lands-
Also an actor, a very charming man.
People would bring him everything,
Everything he could dream- beautiful silks and exotic food,
That no one else could own as a boy- he was happy; happy to own it all-
To the point he thought ‘prince’ was a title of Having it All.
Born from a line of princes, he was quite adored-
But never before had there been a prince like him known,
Born with his heart, out in the cold-
Which the body somehow, didn't enclose.
When he was small,
It was a phase to outgrow but to their surprise,
It stayed where it showed-
With alive, red and visible glow for others; it was a- Curse of hex but the boy wouldn't care
And dare to say; it would be okay because for him,
It was a crown only his to ever wear.
The royal grew aware-
The fear of people- knowing the case they left the prince's back bear-
Even the queen who lived in a high tower, spoke of other princes to be in power- past and the presence,
For who are born whole,
Were Worthy Descendants of the lord for and are born halves,
Were Undeserving Peasants, never to be mourned.
When the story progresses-
The knight was struck down in battle, beheaded, armors torn-
And was left in dust to rot bleeding in the dark,
The royal watched his corpse-
Realizing the truth, it wasn't too late to choose-
The queen sent new clothes, a new armor for the prince to parcel his heart-
To keep it out of reach, mother didn't interfere for she was afraid.
Diasporan Communities, far and wide,
Spread across the world, a global tide,
Bound by a common heritage and pride-
All people united, a force to abide.
They carry with them the memories of the past,
Of struggles and triumphs, of peace and contrast,
They navigate new lands, a journey so vast,
With resilience and hope that forever lasts.
In Diasporan Communities, identity is key,
A sense of belonging, a legacy to be,
Through music, art, and cuisine, they see-
Their roots and heritage, a part of their being.
Diasporan communities, a powerful force,
A bridge between cultures, a source of discourse,
A melting pot, a celebration, a diverse course-
A legacy for the future, an eternal source.
