It was a cloudy day. It was the day that my fellows and I had been waiting for a very long time. I woke up and went to school earlier than other days. As I and my friends walked around chatting with each other, I could see other students dressed up in formal attire like me and some of my friends. After all, it was Deerwalk Poetry Night.
After a long procedure, the finalists of the Deerwalk Poetry Night were selected and I was one of them. Altogether there were 31 participants, 15 from the English language and 16 from the Nepali language. As the competition began, I started getting really nervous which affected my performance. Saisha Pudasaini was declared as the winner of the English language and Manasbhi Niraula of Nepali language. Manasbhi Niraula was also the level champion of lower school in both Nepali and English language while Saisha Pudasaini was the level champion of high school in the English language category. Besides them, Sunabi and Anushree from middle school and Arunesh from high school were also the level champions.
Poetry has always fascinated me. However, I could not meet my expectations this time which made me feel like I was falling behind. I had no confidence in me or rather I had given up before I even performed. My stage fright ruined my whole performance as I stood there whole-heartedly dejected. I learned that confidence always does miracles in every performance, and lack of confidence is something that ruins it.
The cold raindrops were hitting the ground when the clock struck 4. We were under a shade protecting ourselves from the rain. We tried to fit under an umbrella brought by the teacher but could not; so, we split into two groups and went to the event venue. When we reached the venue it was still dark as the event had not started yet; so, I sat at the back of the room. After the program started the emcee called me as one of the judges as I was the previous year’s winner, so I went ahead and joined the judges. After the English category had finished, I along with other judges went to calculate the points and finalizing the winners, after the winner was decided I went back to my previous spot at the back of the room and watched the rest of the program.

Students from grades 1 to 10 participated in this program. All the participants seemed really excited and nervous at the same time as it was reflected on their faces. Talking about the Nepali language category, Manasbhi from lower school, Shunabi from middle school and Arunesh from high school were the champions. Likewise in the English language category, Manasbhi again from lower school, Anushree from middle school and me, Saisha Pudasaini, from high school were the champions. Finally, The Deerwalk Poetry Night 2076 champions were me, Saisha Pudasaini and Manasbhi.
All in all, the program was absolutely successful and in fact really entertaining. Students got to explore their creativity. I personally worked very hard to achieve the title of the champion this year. I think that life brings a lot of opportunities to our door and it is upon us whether to grab it and learn from it or let it go. And,I have miles to go before I sleep.
Deerwalk Poetry Night was held on July 19 at Sagarmatha Hall. Participants were gone all day for their practice sessions. We were also taken to observe Poetry Night after 4 pm. We got there right on time as it did not take too long for the program to start. One after another participant showed up with their poem. Look, don’t get me wrong, every poem was a masterpiece but one poem really got me which does not happen often. I’m glad that I stayed until the end because it was quite a roller-coaster ride. There were moments where I felt like I dropped.
All in all, I cannot say that I did not enjoy the program because I really did. The parents also seemed to be happy after the event so it was a successful event.
Nepal Police Canine Division was established in the year 2026 B.S. It has been 50 years since it started. The dogs provide service in investigating of murder, terrorism, drug import-export, checking bombs before any VIP comes. Dogs are often used in airport to prevent terrorism and drug import or export. Dogs are used in natural calamities like earthquake, landslide, to rescue people or retrieve dead bodies. There are over 300 breeds internationally used in dog services. In Nepal, 8 breeds of dogs are used. Individual scent is different and even twins have a slight difference in scent that is why dogs are used to find anything left by the culprit in the crime scene. When a dog finds a bomb or something like that it gives a certain signal. The most used dog breed in the world is German Shepherd. Dogs can detect smell because of their 250M-300M olfactory cells in their nose.
Dog training in Nepal was started by sending some police officers to Malaysia in 2026 BS. It is located in Maharajgunj. It is a dog training center. The idea of the trip was to make us understand how police dogs are trained and what they are actually able to do. There are many types of dog training like dog basic training, tracker dog training, search dog training, drug identification training. The use of dogs is in crimes like murder, searching for thieves by sniffing the evidence and footprint left by the thief. These kinds used in such tasks are known as tracker dogs. Dogs are instructed to sniff around different passages and stations. The dogs are used in the international airport to protect VIP people and to search for bombs and to control illegal goods. There were eight types of dogs and they showed us the way they sniff and find the criminal. We were there for 1 hour 30 minutes and it was fun to be there. We have learned many things and I hope our school will take us again.
We went on a field visit with Grade 8 to Nepal Police Canine Division of Province-3. We saw and learned many things over there. We got to know that dogs can do very beneficial things for us. According to the facility, dogs are used for four main purposes. One is to find explosives, find illegal drugs, find dead or alive people and to find criminals. They did not only show us how dogs do it but gave us theoretical knowledge also. According to them, the start of this dog service was done in 2026 B.S. There are 48 dogs in Kathmandu and 89 dogs in total all over Nepal. They further told that dogs are very good at smelling things because of their well-developed olfactory system. They have 225M-300M olfactory cells. German Shepherd is also called the all-rounder dog that can do many tasks, almost all of them. We saw the dogs do many tasks mentioned above. At last, the field visit was very interesting and fun.
We, Grade X students, were taken to Nepal Police Canine division which is located at Maharajgunj on July 8, 2019, Monday. We were taken by the school bus to the location. We left the school at around 10 AM and we reached there at around 10:30 AM. Dr.Ram Chandra Satyal guided us. He described to us different dog categories. Nepal Police Canine division was established in 2032 BS. Among 300 dogs 20 dogs are used for police service. He informed us that there are 8 different dog breeds. We were shown a demonstration of all 8 dogs about how they worked. German Shepherd is used to investigating the crime. Hound is used for finding out narcotics and other drugs which are meant to be illegal. Sniffing scent is used by sniff dogs to identify the criminals. Dogs are ready when they wear uniforms. I found jumping dogs very enjoyable and they were trained very well. They were bold and energetic. Hence, we learned many things about dogs. The trip was informative, knowledgeable and enjoyable.
On 1st July 2019, we, the students of Grade 8 and 9, had a field visit to the dog training session in Samakoshi.
