The Information Paradox
- Sashwat Paudel - 2022019, G ... 17 August, 2020

Information paradox, also known as the Blackhole information paradox, is a paradox that suggests that information could be permanently deleted, once it enters a black hole. But, according to quantum mechanics, information can never be lost. Not only can this paradox turn the laws of physics, but also prove that the universe is a hologram.

What is Information?

Information, on the grounds of this paradox, is considered as the property of the arrangement of particles. Take a bunch of carbon atoms and arrange then in a certain order, you get graphite. Take the same atoms and arrange them in a different order, you get a diamond. The fact is that carbon atoms don’t really care if they're part of a diamond or a piece of coal. The basic building blocks of the universe are not so different. They are the same. Now, without information, the universe would consist of identical things. Everything in the universe would be the same.

According to quantum mechanics, information is never lost. Even if we burn a piece of paper, it is said that the information is not lost, only hard to read. This might seem insane, but, if we put in the right effort and tools, we can trace the universe right from the big bang.

Black holes and Hawking radiation

Black holes are constantly losing their mass by a phenomenon called Hawking radiation. Scientists have found out that black holes radiate their mass away like a boiling pot of water. But, this takes an unbelievably long period of time. Black holes radiate their mass away more frequently as time passes by. So, imagine that an apple is sucked by a black hole and it radiates away. Where did the information go? Keeping in mind that we cannot access the black hole unless we are willing to never return, the information is not accessible even when the black hole is alive. It can be assured that while radiating their mass away, black holes can delete the fundamental information in the universe.

The Information Paradox

There have been many solutions to this paradox, but we are uncertain about all of them. Maybe the information is really lost and we can't access it forever. If this is proven to be true, we must be throwing out a lot of science stuff that was working out really well in the past and start to shape the new laws. Maybe the information is not lost nor hidden but passes into a completely new universe we cannot visit. Even if it went to a new universe, it would not help as it would not be retrievable, but it would not break the laws of physics. But the most astounding thing of all is that it could prove that the universe is a hologram.

Holographic principle

If the information that goes into a black hole is stored at the boundary of a black hole, the process of Hawking radiation is able to read the information and carry it away. This way the information is not lost when black holes radiate away. This way the paradox is resolved.

According to this principle, if you were to step into a black hole, your information would be encoded into the black hole. This means that from an outsider’s perspective, you would be a flat 2D image on the edge of the black hole. But, from your perspective, you would be living your usual 3D life but you would never realize that you are, in reality, a 2D image. If this kind of stuff works for black holes, it surely works for the whole universe. Remember that black holes are also bound to the same fundamentals as the universe is. Like a person inside a black hole doesn’t have a clue they are encoded on a flat surface, we might as well be sharing the same fate.

We can just be encoded on a flat surface on the end of the universe.
For now, we just don’t know.

Valorant
- Rohan Upreti - 2022016, Grade ... 16 August, 2020

Valorant is a first-person shooter game. This game was released on June 2, 2020, on the platform Microsoft windows. This game has been developed by Riot Games and the designers of his game are Trevor Romleski, Salvatore Garozzo.

This game is a team-based first-person shooter game. There are a bunch of agents that players chose to play with and every agent has their special ability. We also have to unlock some agents. First, we have to decide in which match we wanna play like an unrated, competitive and spike rush. Spike rush is quick math that takes only 8 minutes to finish and unrated and competitive takes 30 to 40 minutes to complete. There are different ranks in this game and to unlock rank we have to play competitively where if you lose your rank will decrease and if you win your rank will increase. Breach, Brimstone, Cypher, Jett, Omen, Phoenix, Raze, Reyna, Sage, Sova, and Viper are the characters of this game and everyone has their special ability. I like to play as Omen because I know in which scenario which ability I should use and every agent is useful in their way so we can grade or rank them.

This game is a combination of different games like the counter strike but different abilities make this game more interesting. This game also has an anti-cheat software controversy named  Vanguard which makes this game free from hackers. The size of this game is 8.5 GB and this game is also is rated 3.8.

History Of Formula One (F1)
- Prasoon Man Shrestha - 202201 ... 13 August, 2020

Formula One (also known as F1 or Formula 1) is the most prestigious racing series in the world. It has the most advanced racing cars which are driven by the most skilled racers. The world’s top car manufacturers compete in the most glamorous circuits to prove who can build the best and the fastest race car.

It all started in the early 1900s when rich people would race their fancy around Europe in a contest called Grand Prix. But in the period of World War 2, no one could race. But after World War 2 ended an organization named Federation Internationale del’Automobile (FiA) started organizing races that were centered around Grand Prix style races which gradually turned into Formula One.

New car companies like Mercedes and Lancia were coming into the scene. New companies hired the best racers of the time. The cars were gradually developing. Jalopies were slowly developing into modern-day race cars.  But after a horrific race accident involving a Mercedes car which killed 83 spectators, Mercedes decided to abandon motorsport. Lancia also had simultaneous accidents which led the company to abandon motorsport and sell all their Formula One equipment to Ferrari.

In 1959 Cooper Car Corporation made an innovation that would change racing and cars forever. They moved the engine from the front of the driver to the back. It made the cars faster and better and by 1961 every team was using a mid-engine layout. And Ford made a 3 liters V8 engine which was so good that it almost powered all the Formula One cars for the next decade. Then came the turbochargers. The powerful turbochargers were dominating the circuit and it boosted cars from 500 HP to 750 HP. Because of the power that turbochargers gave race cars FiA outright banned it from the circuits.

After the ban of turbochargers, new NA motors were designed which made the cars faster than a turbocharged car. Around 1991 the cars were safer and F1 had gone more than an entire decade without any deaths. But the streak was broken in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix where three drivers were involved in a serious accident. Two of the drivers were fatally injured and 3 times world champion Ayrton Senna died because of the accident which led to rule changes which mostly aimed to slow down the cars.

Then new names appeared including Michael Schumacher. He won many races. For instance, in 2004 Schumacher took the checkered flag in 13 out of 18 races and got 2nd twice. This won him his 7th world championship breaking Fangio’s record which lasted 47 years.

It was being too expensive for the smaller teams to compete so in 2006 the FIA mandated to switch to V8 engines which were smaller and cheaper. Then came the global market rescission. In this time many small teams managed to weather the storm whereas many major companies like BMW and Jaguar had to leave the series. In 2014 another rule changed where it made that all cars should run a 1.6 liters V6 engine which is used to date.

The 2020 F1 series has been postponed to 2021 because of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. F1 2021 will see the biggest change in auto sports history where F1 cars will have a new look and wider tires. The cars for F1 2021 will be designed to be able to race closely with other cars without losing downforce. It will also have a new aerodynamics. The engines for F1 2021 will remain unchanged.  The biggest change that will affect F1 is that there will be a budget set to only $175 million per team per year for cars. This will lead to fairer races. If the teams are unable to follow the new rules it could lead to potential financial or sporting penalties.

WI Tour Of ENG 2020
- Pranjal Khatiwoda - 2022013, ... 12 August, 2020

International cricket had not got anything since the start of this Coronavirus pandemic globally. The cricketing world was affected badly by ending all the leagues around the world with the last international match being played on March 13 between Australia and New Zealand and it was without any crowd attendance because of the order from the Australian government and Cricket Australia to follow it. It was the 1st match to be played without the crowd attendance and was weird too. The batsman hitting the sixes and the fielder’s to get the ball themselves as there was no crowd to pass out the ball. That match was won by Australia by 71 runs. New Zealand was touring Australia for a three-match ODI series and just after the 1st ODI, New Zealand went into complete lockdown because of the pandemic and the player’s return to the country, leaving the ODI series. After then all the series were canceled or pushed forward.

There was a slight improvement from ECB regarding hosting WI for a three-match test series. The WI cricket board approved that call and became the first nation to move to another country for playing matches. It was very hard for them because they had to stay in 14 days quarantine in WI and had to go for several COVID-19 tests and then finally could move towards England. Many players opted out of that series because of the fear of the virus. Finally, West Indies moved to England in a private chartered plane with the players and the background staff. They were asked to stay in a 14 days quarantine in England too before the start of the series and in a Biosecure bubble in the ground hotel at Southampton. They were not allowed to go anywhere else that hotel in Southampton, Ageas Bowl where the 1st test was going to be played. After 14 days of quarantine, they were allowed for practice in the practice ground around Ageas Bowl with the England team following the same protocols of not leaving the hotel and meeting their family. The ECB had done the perfect work with their chairman Colin Graves and Steve worthy regarding all the important things to look after that series. There was another thing going on between the pandemic which was Black Lives Matter (BLM) and that thing was also kept in mind before the start of the series with both England and West Indies players putting the BLM tags on their shirts before the start of the play and also taking the lap as called by the WI players with the commentators forwarding a deep message regarding the BLM, mainly Michael Holding and Ebony Rainford-Brent, former England Women Cricketer. The series was named as  #raisethebat series marking the respect for all the doctors who were involved in helping the peoples in this pandemic. After all these things on July 8 at Ageas Bowl, the international cricket returned and returned with style with the West Indian Pacer Shanon Gabriel knocking off the top of the off-stump of England’s opener Dominic Sibley. The first test was going in the favor of West Indies and they won the 1st test match by 4 wickets and Shanon Gabriel packing the Man of the Match award for his excellent spell of bowling. With a short turn around  4 days on July 16, the second test match was played in Old Trafford, Manchester with the same Bio-Secure bubble. The ECB also took action against England’s pacer Jofra Archer for leaving the team Hotel and going home and risking the other’s life. He was banned for the 2nd test and had to undergo 2 COVID-19 tests and came out negative and available for the 2nd test. The 2nd test was won by England by 113 runs with Ben Stokes bagging the Man of the Match award for his excellent display with the bat and the ball.

The third test would also be played on Old Trafford, Manchester starting from July 24. This #raisethebat series marked the return of International Cricket and after that, a lot of improvements have happened with Three team cricket (3TC) in South Africa and England passing the form for the start of recreational cricket around the country. Pakistan and Ireland are already present in England for their series and finally IPL 13 happening in UAE starting from September 19 to November 8. Everything would be played without crowd attendance because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

My Hero Academia
- Manip Maharjan - 2022009, Gra ... 11 August, 2020

My Hero Academia is an anime and manga series released on November 9, 2015, written by Kohei Horikoshi. My hero academia takes place in a world where every person has a unique and distinctive superpower called quirks. As the surge of the quirks in the My Hero Academia world, dreadful people who misuse their power and ability caused a lot of chaos and turmoil resulting in the rise of heroes, and those people who misused their power were called villains.

The anime takes place in a world like ours where almost every individual is born with a mutation which grants them superhuman abilities and weird powers called quirks. The anime has some meticulous world-building and character development which has helped the anime to rise in popularity not only in Asia but even in North America and Europe. This anime has amassed thousands of fans over the years thanks to the passionate storytelling of Kohei Horikoshi. Another main element for the success of this anime is the simplicity and the innocence of the main character (Izuku Midoriya) and the determination of the main character.

With the surge of a superpower in my hero academia world individual who misused their power also came in the light to combat these villains, people started to take off the street to maintain harmony and peace in the society later these people were called heroes. The story is about a young boy named Izuku Midoriya who is born without a quirk and yearns to become a hero. As he was born without a quirk he always had to run the extra mile to compete with his peers.  As the series starts out the main character begins as a timid, weak, and quirkless guy who wants to be a hero more than anything. Everything changes when the main character is saved by his ideal All might who happens to be the symbol of peace and the most powerful hero in the series. After seeing the determination and the well intent of the boy All Might sees himself in him and chooses to pass his quirk into the boy. After that, the boy embarks on his way of becoming a hero.

Well, the plot seems pretty simplistic and easy to understand which also attributes the success of the anime. But the complicity of the plot is very intense too. Being a battle genre in the shounen genre the battles in this anime is not that simple like in dragon ball where the character yells to earn some extraordinary power. In this anime, different tactics and strategies are deployed for the success of the battles. Moreover, this anime is not just about the battle like other shounen anime, it is about how to overcome the challenges of being a hero.

The art and the graphics of this anime also attribute the instantaneous success of this anime. The graphics and the art structure depicted in this anime is just unprecedented and phenomenal. The artwork done by Studio Bones was unparalleled. If animation is awful then it can ruin the show because we only see what we find appealing. Thanks to the effort of many individuals this anime has been nominated for many awards and has won awards such as Best Action, the Best fight scene, and many more. Plot-wise and animation wise this anime have done a pretty promising job so far and I hope this anime will get a lot of traction in the year to come.

Emotions Through Cinematography
- Dhiraj Chapagain - 2022007, G ... 10 August, 2020

Filmmakers usually use camera movements and angles to change how we feel about a scene. There are many brilliant things that contribute to making a good film such as storyline, acting, directing but the thing we forget to notice is camera movement and angle.

The camera is the eye of the film and it is manipulated to make viewers see what filmmakers want them to see. Basically cinematography acts as a visual guide for the viewers.  Filmmakers use different techniques to serve the emotions of the character and one of the widely used techniques is the eye. When viewers get to see the character's eye it builds empathy for the character. It helps to get connected with what a character is feeling.  Showing eyes mainly relies on three things: the presentation, the lighting, and the shot preference. For the shot selection, filmmakers usually use extreme close-ups. Extreme close up is a type of shot that often draws the viewer's attention to facial features and expressions. In the story the viewer doesn’t need to agree with the character's beliefs or morals, they just need to get a better understanding of the character's highs and lows. Through this what we gain is a complete character in itself.  There are many types of shots that help filmmakers convey emotions to the audience. The first is Eye-level shot, this shot helps to provide a neutral opinion in a story. It also takes part in conveying what a character is thinking or seeing. The second is a low angle shot. This shot frames the character below their eye line and indicates their superiority among others. The third one is the High angle shot. This shot makes the camera points down to the subject and signals the inferiority of the character. The fourth type of shot is the cowboy shot. This shot can be achieved when the camera is placed at the waist level of the characters. It is usually useful when one subject is seated and other stands. The Fifth type of shot is a dutch angle. For this shot, the camera is slanted to one side horizontally creating a sense of mentally disoriented and tension. The sixth one is shoulder level shot. The camera needs to be as high as the character's shoulder to achieve this shot. This makes our subject seem smaller than reality. It is known as the standard form of eyeshot in the industry. The seventh one is establishing a shot. It helps to set up the context of the scene and the surroundings of the character. It reveals the location to the audience conveying where the action is going to occur.  It is usually a wide or an aerial shot.

These were the short introduction to the types of shots and camera angles that help filmmakers convey emotions to the audience. While there are many other shots remaining to be mentioned, these were the most important and frequently used shots. In the end, what matters is a filmmaker’s vision to build the story and create spice to the story.

Why For Others' Statements/Choices?
- Deelisha Maharjan - 2022006, ... 09 August, 2020

Why for other’s statements/choices? People intentionally or unintentionally go for other’s choices and statements. What does it mean going for other’s statements/choices? It means giving priority to others rather than yourself, sacrificing your thoughts, and your point of view for others afraid of what they might think of you. Usually, people don’t realize the fact that their thoughts and point of view towards themselves is very important in life. People don’t usually get this thing because they think it is important what others think of them but not important how they see themselves.

As in Alice in Wonderland, White Queen said ‘You cannot live your life to please others. The choice must be yours. It is true and many people live in the world just to please others and agree with their choices. Life is yours and you don’t have to be afraid to choose it to your own accord. There are many people out there who are living as per other’s choices. They are hesitating to speak their own thoughts which indeed is a big mistake. We need to remind ourselves that we’re not living our lives for others but for ourselves. There are quite a few people who speak for their thoughts and choices. For example, a girl is scared to ask anything in her family when it comes to marriage. She is in love with another person but her family has already talked about her relationship with the person she doesn't know. She hesitates to tell her family that she has a person she loves but due to her family choice she agrees with it. Now, the relationship is disturbed with her because she is going to marry a person whom she hasn’t even met. If she had voiced her opinion, her life would be happier and stable with the person she loved. Another example, of a mother and son. Once they went shopping and the son liked a pair of shoes so much but his mother recommended him a pair of shoes which he didn't like. The mother was going to buy those shoes but the son was scared to say that he didn’t like it. After thinking so much, the son says that he doesn’t like those shoes and he doesn't want them. The mother and son had a discussion about it and in the end, the mother buys the pair of shoes which the son liked. The mother was so satisfied with the answer her son told her. He said, “For you, it might be my annoying nature and crazy nature to get these shoes, but it is not I am living for myself and I have an equal right to ask for the things I like and I want the things I like not the things others choose for me.” His mother was so satisfied with the way he gave his answer.

These are some of the examples. Not only I should live my life for myself but we all should live for ourselves, not for others. We should not rely on others for our decisions and choices. Our decisions and choices are made by us. I request all the people to live your life on your own. Live your life to the fullest. Live your life in an independent way not to rely on others. Not having a regret from others' choices and decisions for you. It’s your life, your rules, your choice, and your decision. (Do make sure your decision is not bringing any harm to others.)

Volleyball
- Kriti Nepal - 2023016, Grade ... 06 August, 2020

Volleyball is a sport played on the court with six people on the court. The game is played with 2 teams on the opposite side of the court that is divided by a net. There are usually 3 sets played in a match that consists of 25 points. The basic rule in volleyball is not to let the ball touch the ground.
The game starts when a person from the team serves the ball to the opposite side of the court and the opposing team receiving it. However, the ball can’t be touched by a player twice. There are many positions while playing volleyball. The team usually consists of players like libero, spiker, wing spikers, setter, pinch server, blocker, etc. The libero is usually in the back part of the court and doesn't let the ball fall. The setter is usually in the front part and sets the ball by opening a path for the spiker to hit the ball on the opposite side of the court. The spiker spikes the ball in the opposite team’s side of the court. There are some rules in the game like touching the net is not allowed in the game and it is considered as foul, the foot should not be placed in the backline while serving it is also considered foul, touching the ball twice by a player is not allowed, the ball should not touch the ground in the opponent's side without crossing the net, the ball should be served underhand or overhand, etc.

Outdoor volleyball is also played as volleyball on the beach too. Volleyball is also the national game of Nepal since 2017 AD. It also helps to develop the stamina of the person and keeps them physically fit.

Social Life Skill - Earthquake Drill
- Estella Shrestha - 2023013, G ... 05 August, 2020

Last year in Mangsir 2076, we had a Social Life Skill Program. The topic of Social Life Skill was Earthquake Drill. We, the students of Grade VIII, had presented techniques of earthquake drill to the students of Grade IV and V. Some of our friends explained about the earthquake and few friends performed the drill (duck, cover, hold) and some other friends talked about how earthquakes occur (tectonic plates).

Firstly our two friends described the earthquake. Secondly, four friends showed their drill (precautions) to juniors. Lastly, three friends talked about the occurrence of earthquakes. The shaking or trembling of the earth is called an earthquake. The drills were performed by following steps i) Duck ii) Cover and Hold Plate tectonics is a scientific theory describing the large scale motion of seven large plates and movements of a larger number of smaller plates of the Earth's lithosphere. Few students asked questions and we were supposed to answer those questions. And we also gave some precautions of being safe from earthquake after earthquake. During the earthquake and before the earthquake, we must be calm during an earthquake because it may occur anywhere at any time.

We should always be ready to be safe from an earthquake. We should have patience and calm our bodies.

  1. Before an Earthquake: Keep the emergency essential items

  2. During Earthquake: Students should follow the drill duck, cover, and hold.

  3.  After the Earthquake : Do not scream or panic or run carelessly. Stay calm and careful.

We should stay prepared for our safety. We should take precautions to protect ourselves from the earthquake.

Quantum Computer
- Arunesh Manandhar - 2022002, ... 04 August, 2020

A quantum computer is a device for computation that makes direct use of distinctively quantum mechanical phenomena, such as superposition and entanglement, to perform operations on data. In a classical computer, information is stored as bits; in a quantum computer, it is stored as qubits.
The basic principle of quantum computation is that the quantum properties can be used to represent and structure data and that quantum mechanisms can be devised and built to perform operations with this data. Although quantum computing is still in its infancy,  experiments have been carried out in which quantum computational operations were executed on a very small number of qubits. If a large scale of quantum computers can be built, they will be able to solve certain problems exponentially faster than any of our current classical computers.

Quantum computers are different from other computers as DNA computers are traditional computers based on transistors. Some computing architectures such as optical computers may use classical superposition of electromagnetic waves but without some specifically quantum mechanical resources such as entanglement, they have less potential for computational speed-up then quantum computers.

It has been shown that a quantum computer will be able to perform any task, if we use our classical computer, it will simply perform the calculation in a similar manner to a classical computer. Some types of algorithms are not easy to formulate, but it is possible from quantum computers. The power of quantum computers integer factorization is believed to be computationally infeasible with an ordinary computer for large integers that are the product of only a few prime numbers. A quantum computer could solve this problem more efficiently than a classical computer using shoe’s algorithm to find its factors. In particular, most of the popular public key ciphers are based on the difficulty of factoring integers, including forms of RSA. These are used to protect secure web pages, encrypted email, and many other types of data. Classical computers have to solve one problem at a time in sequence, but quantum computers can solve multiple problems at the same time. That kind of speed has the potential to revolutionize entire industries.

Quantum Computers could also analyze all the data at once and give us a better idea of when and where bad weather will strike. We’d have advanced notice of major storms like hurricanes and the extra preparation time could help save lives. A quantum computer would be able to map out trillions of molecular combinations and quickly identify the ones that most likely work, significantly cutting down the cost and the time of drug development. It could sequence and analyze a person's genes much faster than the methods we have now, and that could also help make personalized drugs and healthcare more available to the masses. Astronomers have discovered nearly 2000 confirmed planets outside our solar system using “Kepler space telescope”. A quantum computer could tackle more data in any given telescope view, scope more exoplanets, and help quickly to identify which ones have the most potential to harbor life. So, it will change the world.

After the above all these points, the quantum computer is a very new technology or in other words, we can say that it is a very advanced technology of a new generation which is very fast to do any work and capable to solve any complex problem and more powerful device compared to today’s classical computer.

Why Did The “Okay” Become So Controversial?
- Bikarsha Ojha - 2022005, Grad ... 03 August, 2020

We all know the “made you look” gesture or the “Ok” symbol from the internet, which is just a “meme” everywhere. Everyone uses it to make someone look like a fool or just to say Okay. But this wasn't the case every time. The “made you look” is quite unbelievable as it had been a very big issue.

We all know the “made you look” gesture. With a circle formed by your thumb and the index finger and the rest of the three fingers raised up placed on a point such as your kneecap tricking your colleague/friend tricking them to make them look at it, making them look like a fool. But, this wasn't the case before 2017 when the meme was coming quite popular all over the internet naming it the “NOT Ok” gesture. According to an article written by “The Boston Globe” on September 21, 2018, it believes that the symbol had presented as “White Power” and was claimed as “racist” which made no sense. This “hate symbol” origin was given by an anonymous message by a group named 4chan who tried to “trick” the media symbolizing was white power. News channels were flooded by the news that the “okay symbol” had been a hate symbol as a “Christchurch Murderer Suspect” had used it in the New Zealand Court. This was not a new thing at all. In 2016, Pepe who is a renowned “meme” was declared as a hate symbol, even when he was backed by the whole of twitter from common people to “famous people '' before the 2016 elections. Matt Fury, the official creator, had killed it because of why it hated and what it brought its state into. Famous politicians had begun to erupt on twitter and of course, the hate had begun where its future was looking bleak. Countless Navy army men were even sued by people as a white supremacist symbol to even as a Nazi symbol which even represented “communism” by web pages and even news streamed on the internet. Even people were sued such as a gru character who was fired as he used a “hate symbol”. A sports fan banned from a stadium of NBC Chicago Stadium, navy army people suspended, US coast guard fired and even a politician named Zina Bash was sued during a conference when she “intentionally” showed the hate symbol. This was extremely stupid for many reasons. First of all, we use the “ok” gesture every day. From meditation or to even symbolizing “Okay” to their colleagues, the fact that weak responses gained more attention, caused it as a hate symbol. This had no sense because if we go to the message by 4chan, it was meant to manipulate and troll the world media. But after countless debates and investigations, this “hate symbol” has lost some heat nowadays even offensive in many countries such as France, Japan, Brazil, Germany, etc.

This conflict has made no sense how important it has been given. The “okay” symbol had a neutral meaning but of all the political propaganda which had no such outcome had made it a “hate” symbol with the weakest of evidence.

Concorde
- Aryan Thagunna - 2022003, Gra ... 02 August, 2020

We live in a time when aviation is just a normal part of our lives. It is like it was always there. It was more than a century ago that a plane took off. It was December 17th, 1903 when Wright brothers flew their first plane. They were successful with the piston engine aircraft. Then, humans wanted to push the boundaries, and then came the jet engines. But 68 years later and we are still flying in jetliners. Well, at least the improved ones.

It is not entirely true when we say there hasn’t been a major breakthrough in the aviation industry. We have had better planes but they didn’t work out for us. You probably haven’t heard of the Concorde. It might be either because you were not born back then or it never made its way to Nepal. Concorde was a plane capable of breaking the sound barrier. That is, it was able to fly at a speed faster than that of sound. Sound travels at a speed of 1234.8 km/hr. The Concorde flew at a speed of 2179 km/hr. This meant that a piston engine plane took 13 hours to go from London to New York. That’s 5566.721 km in 13 hours. Do the math to find the speed. When jetliners came, they not only flew faster but higher too, so the journey got cut down to just 7 hours. But when there was a revolution in the aviation industry, along came the supersonic planes which cut the journey to just 3 and a half hours. On paper, it sounds that this should have been the future of air travel. But boy were they wrong! Concorde was about to be the greatest missteps of the aviation industry, except maybe the airships.

Building a plane to go faster than the speed of sound was an engineering challenge. The high speed, temperature, air resistance, and passenger safety. Concorde was built by a government collaboration between Britain and France. They wanted to be a step ahead of the Americans and lo behold! Prototypes were presented to the public for the first time on 7–8 June 1969 at the Paris Air Show. The Americans due to various issues could not come up with their own. Just like any new piece of invention, Concorde received a lot of skepticism from its critics. They complained about the loud takeoff and landing noise. They also complained about the Concorde's fuel efficiency as it burned a lot more fuel than a jetliner.  But again, when a plane was as good as the Concorde, it didn’t matter what the critics thought. Airlines from all over the world started filling orders for more than 70 Concordes.

Concorde estimated the orders to grow to 200 by the next year. But when it went into service, people started protesting about its noise and sound pollution. The Concorde's sonic boom (a loud explosive noise caused by the shock wave from an aircraft or other object traveling faster than the speed of sound.) reached 100-110 decibels and sounded like an explosion going off. People living close to the airport started complaining about the huge sound it produced. Due to these factors, many countries started banning Concorde from flying in their airspace. Concorde was facing a serious backlash. Evidence started to mount that it was also harmful to the environment. Concorde was a very expensive plane to operate. Although it was twice as fast as a jetliner, it burned four times more fuel than the jetliners. In the world where oil prices had risen just as Concorde came to service, this was a major concern. Due to these reasons, the orders started canceling and the Concorde program was left with just a handful of orders. In order to get their money back with no profit, the program had to sell about 150 planes but it couldn’t even sell 15. But due to the treaty of the two countries, neither Britain nor France could pull out of the program. They had to go on with the program so on 21st January 1976, Concorde entered commercial aviation. British Airways and Air France were the only operators of the Concorde with 7 planes in service each. Since these companies were owned by the country’s government they had been forced to.  They lost about 100,000 pounds on one flight from Britain to Bahrain in today's money. In order to get their money back, the airlines decided to aim this plane at the richer class of passengers who could pay more for the flight. This was a commercial success and for a decade the Concorde even acted as a symbol of pride for Britain and France. But in the early 2000 Concorde's impeccable safety record came to an end when Air France’s plane crashed killing everyone on board. Along with the rising maintenance cost of the aging planes and the attacks of 9/11 that caused a huge recession in global air travel, Concorde was looking like an unsensible economic investment. So in October 2003, the most notable airplane of the most ambitious aviation project retired from service.
