Monkeygate Scandal (2008)
- Pranjal Khatiwoda - 2022013, ... 23 November, 2020

Back then, India was touring Australia for a Test Series. India was coming from a fresh defeat against Australia, losing the Melbourne Test Match. A lot of controversies arose in that Test Match. The Sydney Test Match is often regarded as the “Monkeygate Scandal”. It was said that the Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds was called “Monkey” by the Indian off-spinner Harbajan Singh. Such racist comments were not allowed at all. Harbajan was banned for the upcoming 3 tests, but India appealed to leave the series and Harbajan denied calling Symonds “monkey”, which resulted in the overturn of the ban that was alleged against Harbajan.

It was very important for India to win and play quality cricket in Sydney after the loss in Melbourne. They had a perfect start in the 1st innings as Australia collapsed in the first session. But it was the infamous “Steve Bucknor” decisions who overturned the Out decisions to Not-Out. The Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds was caught behind in the ball bowled by Ishant Sharma but the decision was still not in India’s favor. Andrew Symonds and Australian Captain Ricky Ponting steadied the ship with luck in favor of them as a lot of “Out” decisions were overturned. Australia recovered from 163/6 ko 463 all out in the first innings as Andrew Symonds scored a brilliant “162 not out”. The odds were not in favor with the bat too for India as India’s opening batsman Wasim Jaffer was given out off a no-ball (another umpiring misjudgment). Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman batted beautifully as they both scored a century each. At that time, the Australian crowd used to believe that Sachin Tendulkar may not play in Australia again, so he got standing ovations at every shot he played. The Little Master made a lot of runs in that series, all over Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and entertained the crowd. With the likes of Sachin, Laxman, Ganguly, Dravid, Harbajan. India got a good 2nd innings lead as they ended their 1st innings with 532 all out. The main drama was about to begin.

The match referee “Mike Procter” alleged the use of a racist comment on Harbajan. The Indian dressing team was quite unhappy with it. Australian media were backing Australian players and Indian media backing their players. The Commentators were also declaring that the decision was not true, India was getting false allegations regarding it but none of the Australian Cricket Board spoke a word on it. After all these things, Australia came to bat in the 2nd innings and declared at 401/7. India was called by Australia to bat on the last day chasing a target of 333. The decisions were still not in the fair of India as Rahul Dravid was given out caught behind which was seen that the ball hit the pad. There was not a single chance of chasing 333 on the last day with just about 75 overs left in the play. Saurav Ganguly was playing beautifully on the other end, and India was focusing on ending the Test Match as a draw. The wrong decision was still haunting  India as Ganguly was given out on a ball that was caught after it landed on the ground, which was properly a not-out case. The Australian skipper who was fielding at slip, also claimed the catch to be fair with Michael Clarke. And, it was that era where when a fielder claims the catch, “It’s out”. The umpire could have easily gone for the review, but they didn’t. Ganguly was given a false out for the catch. The Indian media showed the footage that it was a false catch, the ball clearly grounded the ground and there was still a lot of drama going on. The match progressed further and it came to just surviving 2 overs with 3 wickets in hand. India was comfortably in a position of closing that test match as a draw. Ricky Ponting, the Australian captain threw the ball to Michael Clarke in the 2nd last over of the day, and the unexpected thing happened, he took 3 wickets in a single over, and India lost the Test Match with an over to spare. The match was all done and dusted.

The time comes for a press conference where an Indian reporter asked the Australian Skipper that they didn’t show the sportsman spirit throughout the game. At that time Ponting was leading a team with a goal to “WIN”. No matter what the situation, they stepped on the field to win, just win. Ponting arrogantly answered the question asked by the reporter. Then, the Indian Skipper came to the press conference where he was asked the same question and he answered that “ In this test match, there was only a team who were playing fair and that was India”. India was out with the series already 2-0. A hearing was organized by the Cricket board regarding the issues between Andrew Symonds and Harbajan Singh. The hearing lasted for around 6-7 hours. Harbajan was banned for three test matches as given by the Match Referee Mike Proc

- Anushka Basnet - 2023002, Gra ... 23 November, 2020

Looking for Alaska: Book Review
- Aryan Thagunna - 2022003, Gra ... 22 November, 2020

Young Adult literature has always fascinated me. Always might be an overstatement but lately I’ve been engrossed in this genre for quite a while. From ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ to ‘ Lord of the Flies’, I think they’re absolute masterpieces. Probably it is because the characters and the story resembles me a lot. Whatever the reason is, when I came across Looking for Alaska, John Green (The writer) absolutely blew my mind.

For his junior year in high school, Miles Halter, a teenager who has no friends, decides to attend Culver Creek Boarding School as a family legacy. Miles has an addiction for people’s last words and one that has stuck with him is the renaissance poet Rabelais’ dying words, “I go to seek a great perhaps”. And that is exactly what Miles is doing in Culver Creek. Like a typical school there are cliques in Culver Creek but the most notable and the largest being the rich kids and the poor kids. Miles debuts in the latter with his roommate Colonel’s help. And soon enough he is part of a mini clique himself. There’s Pudge, the nickname his friends give Miles, Colonel, his brilliant but slightly insane roommate; Takumi, the Japanese kid with the Southern accent; and Alaska Young, “the hottest girl in all of human history.” His friends at Culver Creek introduce Miles to smoking, drinking and pranks between the two cliques all while dodging the prying eyes of the ‘Eagle’, headmaster of the School.

The book shows the experience that Culver Creek has to offer through Pudge’s eyes. His life in Culver Creek is centered around Alaska. Alaska is described as an unpredictable girl with a heart of gold for her friends and anger for her foes, incredibly attractive along with unmatched intelligence and having mixed feelings towards Pudge. Pudge explains “If people were rain I was drizzle and she was a hurricane.”

Pudge shows how hard it can be for someone to fit in especially in the teen years. A time when we feel everything is either going perfect or horribly wrong. A moment when we feel there are only a handful of people who understand us. Pudge and his group of friends reflect the life of every teen in one way or another. The crisis of not knowing the purpose of doing something, the crisis of not having friends you can rely on and especially the crisis of finding a place for yourself. Pudge struggles to show himself capable and grown up throughout the novel to win his friend’s trust or Alaska’s attention. Although the reason might be different, we have tried to act grown up at least once at one point in our lives. The sheer resemblance of the events and the feelings of the book attracts readers like us.

‘How will I ever get out of this labyrinth!”

“So what’s the labyrinth?” I asked her…

That’s the mystery, isn’t it? Is the labyrinth living or dying? Which is he trying to escape- the world or the end of it?”

The writer speaks a great deal about some sort of labyrinth. A labyrinth that has fascinated the likes of Alaska. We for sure don’t know what that labyrinth is. Is it referring to life or does it symbolize love and feelings? This becomes the topic of discussion in some part of the book and rather forces us to look at things in a different way. The puzzle becomes quite important as the book proceeds. We all are in a certain sort of labyrinth at various times of our lives. The characters in this book experience a labyrinth of guilt, love, friendship, and teenage life.

Speaking of characters, this book review would be incomplete without acknowledging the great work John Green has done with the characters. The intriguing back stories, the catchy nicknames and the impressive personality they all have. I have to admit that the book was a lot interesting just because of the nicknames. They were a common and small part of this novel but still count for the massive impact they have on the reader. Characters are the base of novels such as this one. What makes a character even better is when readers can relate to them. That is exactly what the characters here help us do. Relate. The teenage spirit is the most intriguing part about this novel. This limbo stage of life we teenagers are in, runs on the basis of friendship, loyalty, identity, meaning of everything around us and a wee bit of mischief. The book really sheds light into this.

The way the story unfolds, it isn’t predictable. Why are the people Looking for Alaska? Was she kidnapped? Lost? The book doesn’t give it away until the climax. That being said, the book isn’t hard to follow either. We can understand the happenings of the story. It sometimes meets and sometimes exceeds our expectations. We have suspense that makes us wanna read more b

- Pranjal Khatiwada - 2022013, ... 22 November, 2020

Learn
- Deelisha Maharjan - 2022006, ... 19 November, 2020

We are all humans and make mistakes, don’t we? Success isn’t always guaranteed but learning and growing up is all about learning from the mistakes we make. We all make wrong decisions which we regret. After all, we all are humans and it is the truth that nobody in this world is perfect and right all the time. We humans learn lessons and spiritual values from many things, don’t we?

You make a mistake and you learn the lesson but why don’t you apply the right method to make that mistake your biggest lesson you have learned? You know you fail, but learn to not give up from that. Learn to be more hardworking and disciplined. One failure cannot describe all your success right? You know you want to ask questions in class or to someone but you’re afraid, just learn to ask the question. You don’t have to put all the fears within you. To learn is all you and I can do it in our life. Everything in our life is what we learn, we learned to walk, learned to speak, learned to sing, learned to study, learned to play, learned to dance, learned to travel, learned to ask and so on. Learning plays a very vital role in our life and you and we must not forget it. You must learn to keep your thoughts in public so you can learn new things from new people. You must learn to speak up and stand up for yourself because it is your life and no one will do it for you. If you fall in the middle, you must learn to stand up for yourself and not give up. If you can’t win then it is fine but you must learn to fight for it, you must try it, know that you are capable and you have the ability for it. You will not learn anything until you try.

You must try to learn every lesson in your life and the spiritual values in your life.Learn to fly up in the sky where people adore your success. You need to learn, believe, change, grow, and become successful.

No Goals, No Go
- Arunesh Manandhar - 2022002, ... 18 November, 2020

One of my favourite conversations starts with a question to ask people, ‘What are your goals?’ The answer you get can tell a great deal about someone. Nearly, everytime, there's common among those who feel sad in their current situation, are unhappy most of their lives, and who feel as though they are going nowhere: they have no goals.

In some cases, it is simply a case of not understanding the power and presence that goals provide (and in these cases, simple introduction is the answer.) Goal setting is easy once you understand how to do it.  With other falls, they may understand the power of goals, but they simply haven’t taken the time or effort to set any (or to update their last batch of goals.) It is important to set new goals as soon as you achieve your car lies over, otherwise your car loses momentum. Others claim to be “going with the flow” (which often means drifting not going nowhere) and waiting for inspiration to strike.)

A person without a vision is like a ship afloat on the water. Surely, it might be a fun ride, you may get to relax a bit, but next thing you know, a couple of months have gone off and you will run out of rations, clean water, sunscreen and sanity. (The essentials) But a ship with a destination in mind travels with passion and purpose, and continues progress. When you have clear, concise goals, the universe delivers the exact clues you require to follow your course and reach your destination.

Do not wait for inspiration because inspiration is waiting on you, right now at this very moment. Create a vision. Involve your passion, as for a sign. You will get one. But if you do not select a destination, do not be surprised if you just keep drifting in limbo. You have no right to whine about how “nothing is happening” because that part was ultimately up to you and you never lose a destination! Be brave, be daring, be confident and have faith in you, whatever you ask for, you can have. Go for it!

Existential Nihilism
- Dhiraj Chapagain - 2022007, G ... 17 November, 2020

We are all going to die, no one knows what to do and those who know are the ones who are trying to sell something and nothing we do will be significant in the future days to come. Nihilism is the philosophical theory that believes that life has no meaning or value. It suggests that a single human or even the entire human species is insignificant to change the totality of existence. According to this theory, each individual is barred from knowing ‘why’.

According to  Edward R Murrow, “Anyone who isn’t confused, really doesn’t understand the situation.”

We are living in a strange time, we are more connected than ever with access to the world’s wealth of information and knowledge. Rising literacy rates, declining poverty rates year by year, we can possibly be in by far the best time in human history to be alive. Yet at the same time, we have a lot of similar and new problems to tackle. From automation replacing jobs, higher retirement ages, pandemic, and complete lack of trust in the people leading our society and or even the country across the globe. Now if we add these all together then what we get is an entire generation coming into adulthood tackling with financial, mental, and social values working against them. Although the past generations faced a lot of difficulties (industrial crisis, world wars), we need to consider that this is the information age. The way of living life is still the same for these young adults which were practiced by their parents. Going to school, getting a job, having a family, and saving for retirement. This is only the tip of the iceberg. The housings now are nowhere cheap as they were 10 years ago. If we check the inclement of the inflation rate from 10 years ago it counts nowhere in the raise of daily wages. The technological changes made 10 years ago changes so fast that barely anyone can keep up with it. This can be the reason why Nihilism is getting more and more popular these days. Now from the surface, the idea of valuing nothing can seem very terrifying but tearing down the old house will not necessarily lead to homelessness, but can provide the opportunity to build a new better house. “Meaning” is an abstract concept. “Abstraction” and “conception” are both human ideas and we decide what has meaning.

Naruto
- Manip Maharjan - 2022009, Gra ... 12 November, 2020

Naruto is an anime and manga series written by Masashi Kishimoto and was first released in 1997. The story is about a ninja named Naruto Uzumaki and his journey to becoming the Hokage of the hidden leaf village, basically a ninja president of his village.  The story seems to be very simple and basic and it is but the complicity of the character is pandemonium.

Like any shounen anime (a genre of anime) the title almost sums of the story. The story starts 13 years before the current timeline of the show when a beast with nine tails emerges in the hidden leaf village. The beast was at last defeated by the 4th Hokage at the cost of his life and the beast was sealed within an infant to suppress the beast. The infant was none other than the main protagonist Naruto Uzumaki. Naruto is a feisty teenager who lives in the village hidden in the leaf  Naruto is shunned by the entire village for being the host of the nine-tailed beast who terrorized the village and his entire purpose is to get the redemption and respect of every person in the village by being the leader of the village.

The character design and construction of the world of this anime are really phenomenal. The story is divided into two parts which are the early teenage years of naruto and the young adult stage of naruto. The world of naruto is inspired by our own world in various ways like the geography of the world of naruto is almost like our own with a lot fewer ninjas. The world of naruto is made up of the five great nations which are like the powerhouses of the naruto world and other nations. The story of Naruto is kind of a wild ride. At first, the world-building of the show seems pretty decent but as the story progressed, the plot became more and more fascinating and the character's progression was all amazing. This series also has taken reference from real world conflicts and problems and displayed in the series.

This anime is one of the most popular anime of all time and is still going strong. The naruto portion of the story is almost concluded but some parts of the story is still left. The main reason for the success of this anime is battle style and the ninjas involved in the series. In naruto the ninja are portrayed as really cool strong guys which is in fact true and really satisfying to watch . As a viewer of the show I could see the progress of the plot and how the author progressed the series.

Naruto in a nutshell is one of the most incredible stories that has ever been told and the story is very original. Also the character and the meticulous character and world building is unparalleled to any show in the past or the present.
