What is the best food to serve at an event or party in Nepal?
- Rushina Tamang - 26008, Grade ... 07 December, 2022

A party or an event involves bringing together a lot of people. When a lot of people get together they talk, they walk around the venue, they dance, sing and the children run around and play. All these activities will make a person tired. And when a person is tired, in order to gain back their energy, they need to eat food. A lot of people have a lot of hungry stomachs. And a lot of stomachs to feed means a lot of food.

Not everyone in an event or party has the same type of diet. Some people may even be allergic to some types of foods. So, the best type of food to serve at an event or party cannot really be one type of food. There has to be varieties of food. So that it satisfies everyone’s diets and if people are allergic to some foods then they always have other options. And in Nepal, the food that suits all these requirements is Dal Bhat which is one dish itself, there are varieties of delicacies. There is rice, dal, vegetables, meat, beans, and even other side dishes. I think it is the perfect dish to serve at a party or event. It has spice and savory flavors which is perfect to lighten up the mood and it tastes good. And what can be better than good tasting food at an event or party when you’re hungry?

Dal bhat is very filling. Since it contains a lot of delicacies and it in itself is a huge meal. And serving food that is delicious, filling and fulfills the requirements of people is the best food to serve at a gathering. And not only that, it is also a very cheaper option in comparison to cakes, baked goods, or other fancy dishes. Since it is a Nepali staple food, it is loved by almost every Nepali person. It is really easy to make. But just dal bhat won’t do for a huge crowd. As I mentioned before, not everyone eats or likes the same food. So adding other side delicacies is also very important. Such as, sweets or fried sausages and french fries or other sautéed delicacies. And the great thing about dal bhat is that it contains varieties of foods. So, even the fried sausages, french fries and even the sweets can be eaten with Dal bhat. And with sweets as desert it would be a full meal.

Dal bhat is a staple or everyday meal to Nepali people. It can be made in different ways. And one can even change the side dishes served with it. You can eat bhat with just the side dishes and no dal. Or you can just eat the side dishes if that is what a person prefers. There are endless side dishes that can be served with Dal bhat because rice goes with almost everything.

Kids should not be forced to eat the foods they do not like !
- Roji Gurung - 26007, Grade IX ... 05 December, 2022

Children are known to be naughty and playful. No matter how naughty their behavior is, everyone loves them. Every parent wants the best for their child. So, they do many things for them like providing them the very best of things, providing them with good education, all the luxuries and many more. Most parents are obsessive and possessive over their child. Even regarding a child's health, parents are concerned and worried. So, they force their child to eat foods they don’t like.

Mainly parents force their child to eat vegetables  As kids absolutely hate vegetables they deny eating it at any cost. But parents being parents they forcefully make their child eat those foods which is wrong. Parents should stop forcing kids to eat the foods they don’t like. Instead of forcing them to eat they should try to convince them and if the kid still does not want to eat the food then they should leave it. Although parents can keep offering their child the food, they should never compel them. Forcing kids to eat food they don’t like may negatively affect them. Forcing makes them think that they would never ever eat the food again. Parents should give some time for their child to think about the food. They should let them try the food once, if they like the food they would eat it but if they do not they would not eat it. And parents should respect their decision. Also forcing your child to eat when they are not hungry is wrong. Parents should be understanding. Forcing their child to eat if they have not eaten for the whole day is fine but forcing your child to eat when they are refusing is awry. Forcing kids to eat should depend on their age. Infants and toddlers should be forced to eat as they do not know whether they are full or not and also they do not know anything about foods. Teenagers should not be forced as they know what they are eating and how they are eating. Parents should know about their kids' preferences. If a kid does not like the dish their parents made for them then they should not force them to eat it. For example, some like boiled eggs and some like omelets. If your child likes boiled eggs then you should make them a boiled egg and not force them to eat an omelet. If you want your child to eat the food you made you should try making it in a different way. If you made some fried rice and your kid does not like it you should try making it by adding eggs and other seasonings. This may increase the interest of the child to eat the rice. Parents should try playing with food and make it interesting. As said, this would make the child eat the food. No parents should ever force their child to eat. Later kids may naturally eat foods themselves.

In conclusion, forcing children to eat food they don’t like results in developing trauma. They may suffer from eating disorders and might end up hating foods.

- Remon Sangat - 25012, Grade X ... 05 December, 2022

- Roji Gurung - 26007, Grade IX ... 02 December, 2022

Mira Rai: An Inspiration
- Angel Dhimal - 25002, Grade X ... 02 December, 2022

A 33 years old Nepalese sky and trail runner, Mira Rai was born on 31st December, 1988 in a small remote village of Bhojpur in the east of the country. She belonged to a destitute family. When she was younger only her brothers went to school whereas she was at home helping her parents with household chores. She was just 12 years old when she left her education due to the family’s economic crisis. Usually in a Nepali society a girl reaches a specific age is married off and is made to have children but Mira had different plans. She would run 3 hours straight to the market carrying 28 kg rice bags and sell them and return to her village and earn some money out of it. When she was 14 years old she decided to join the Maoists Army Guerrilla. She concealed her decision from her parents but instead told them that she was going to a camp. She in her interview had also mentioned that her mother had tried to commit suicide after she did not return home for more than 7 months.

When the war ended in 2006, the Nepalese Army had discharged her as she was just a minor. After that she joined a government rehabilitation programme and continued running for fun. She had no money for food but she would still run. After Mira returned home she decided to do something for her family so she traveled to Kathmandu to pursue karate and running. After she moved to the capital city, she practiced running on ring roads. One morning when she was running in the hills surrounding Kathmandu valley she met a group of runners who were running in the same place. After seeing her running they asked her to meet them for the following week for a running race. Mira did not know what actually was an organized running race. When she reached there she found out that it was an ultra marathon race of 50km. It was the first time that she was participating in such a race. Despite no preparation, no proper food and clothes, Mira won the race and caught the attention of many people. The sports organizers were very surprised to see such a dedicated girl towards running.

Her mentor Richard Bull helped her a lot with her running. Mira always believed that she would be successful one day. She had also won the 200km Mustang trail mountain race. Mira was now an international and national face. She had participated in many races and won breaking records too. In 2016 she had faced a knee injury during a competition in the United Kingdom so she took a break for sometime. She entered the 82 km Mont Blanc Skyrunner World Series. It was one of the toughest races in the world. In 2017 she rejoined and participated in the September 2017 at the 120 km Ben Nevis Ultra Trail Race in Scotland, UK, where she won the race and set a new course record in a time of 14 hours and 24 minutes. Mira is our national personality. She has been successful in spreading her name all over the world and has also made our country proud. She is now an example for many young girls. Her story inspires us to do what we set our mind to as long as we are dedicated. If we want, we can do anything. She was just a normal village girl who had joined Maoist Army but because of her passion and dedication she has now become one of the famous faces in national and international places.

Do you think that homework should be compulsory?
- Riddhis Sharma - 26006, Grade ... 01 December, 2022

An Institute / University / School teaches people about subjects they are not aware of or are interested in. Schools usually have hundreds of subjects for the students to learn but students prefer one over the other. While studying a certain subject or a topic the teachers usually give assignments that are meant for the students to practice but are these assignments really necessary?

Well, being a student myself I sometimes think that homeworks should not be mandatory but I understand why homework is made mandatory. Homeworks is meant for the students to revise later after the class so that they can memorize or understand how to solve a problem or how to find a solution to a question.  As for my opinion on homework, I think it is quite important for a student's daily life.  Homeworks are really useful in times like exams to revise the things a person studied throughout a specific time period.  Homeworks in school level is one of the most important things. Homeworks revise the things taught by the teacher in class and also increases the capacity of students to solve problems. A load of homework also contributes to learning stress handling skills.  Even though a lot of homework helps to learn how to handle stress it could be a burden sometimes. Too much stress could cause illness so teachers should refrain from giving too much homeworks considering the fact that other teachers give homeworks too. I believe, to  get a better grasp of the things students learn at school, students should be given homeworks but not too much as processing a lot of things could be hard at times.

So in conclusion, I think that homework should be required to help the students learn and understand a specific subject.

My View On War
- Aarav B.C - 25001, Grade X on ... 30 November, 2022

There are many wars that have happened, wars that are still happening, soldiers who fought in battles and soldiers who are still fighting. Wars bring death and violence in our society. War is not something we can be proud of. Many wars have been fought throughout our history including World War I and World War II, the deadliest wars ever fought in human history. Hundreds and thousands of innocent lives were lost for such a mere thing as ‘politics and power’. This suggests that our society is heading in the wrong direction.

Of course wars have changed overtime. Years ago people fought wars with swords, spears and hammer, after that society slowly started developing and guns were invented, now nuclear rockets and bombs have been invented. It seems as our society develops, the weapons get more powerful and stronger and the hunger for power grows even stronger. Should gaining such a mere thing as political power be our goal in life? I believe it should be more than just that. Wars seem natural. Even millions of years ago wars were fought, animals too fight. This is just the way we are. We are different, animals are different, we have different views and opinions and these things make us human. But that does not mean that we should choose violence. We have many other options than violence.

Even in the present context, the Ukraine and Russia war, Israel and Palestine conflict are still taking place. People are willing to kill and get killed over political control or authority over a piece of land. Why has power blinded people from humanity? Why is the hunger for power increasing? For me the answers to these questions are still a big mystery.

I am very amused and shocked when I hear about politicians like Adolf Hitler who have killed so many people, innocent people for political power and authority. When Nazis rose to power they killed so many innocent Jews that the total population of Jews at the time was about 1% of Germany’s total population. Why have people been so blind? Why don’t people have such a basic thing as humanity? Why do these people have no sympathy? Why are they not scared of wars? I have so many questions but still no answers.

We humans are known to be the most superior creatures on earth but these actions humans do makes me question this fact. War should never be an option. Now the society has become more powerful than ever and I speculate if there were to be another World War, earth would not be in the state of sustaining life. Millions and millions of innocent lives would be lost for nothing. I hate wars and everyone should too. Violence should never be our option. We should speak calmly, discuss problems, use our conscience and if we do that we would never have to use violence. If we don’t end war, war will end us and that is a fact.

- Aavash Malla - 26001, Grade I ... 30 November, 2022
