Connection between Science and Spirituality
- Sanskriti Karki - 25023, Grad ... 23 January, 2024

 Introduction

In the grand journey of understanding the world, we commonly experience two different paths: science and spirituality. Science relies on experiments and observations, and searches for tangible aspects of the real world. Spirituality includes the recognition of a feeling or belief that there is something greater than ourselves, which guides us through our life and includes a sense of connection that goes beyond what we can see and touch. Despite their contrasting differences, when these paths come together it forms an abundant understanding of our existence.

To go deeper into the topic, the difference between spirituality and religion needs to be recognized. Spirituality and religion are two very different concepts, religion usually focuses on worshiping a certain deity or following certain rules or rituals whilst spirituality is about exploring your own connection and believing that there is something greater than ourselves, something more to being human than only living, broader significance of life. And that everything is divine in nature and we are a part of the greater whole.

Science of spirituality

Moreover, science can be compared to a detective who is always driven by curiosity and an insatiable desire to acquire knowledge. For instance the Hubble Space Telescopeᅳa tool that allows scientists to delve into the mysteries of outer space and unravel astonishing discoveries about our vast universe. The amazing images that this camera captures, not only grows our knowledge but also evokes a profound sense of wonder and connection within us which is known to be magical. The common guard between spirituality and science is that both are concerned with understanding the fundamental nature of the universe and our place within it.

Spirituality is belief while science is the proof of the same thing. When these two concepts combine together it forms a greater understanding of the fundamental nature of the universe. Scientists use different tools and experiments to study those things that we can observe, measure and understand. Objects like telescopes, microscopes allow them to see tiny things in large galaxies. This helps them to know the world in a better way. On the other hand, spirituality observes the parts of life that are not measurable, visible or tangible. It explores feelings, beliefs and experiences that are beyond what we see with our naked eyes.

While doing all the experiments, science and spirituality meet in the middle, quantum physics can be considered an example. This is a branch of science that studies things on a tiny scale, and its findings can seem to be a bit unbelievable and even spiritual sometimes. This makes scientists, spiritualists and common people ask big questions about the reality of nature, existence of life and overly opens doors to discussions including both scientific and spiritual perspective.

Why should Spirituality and science work together?

In order to understand why science and spiritualist collaboration can be beneficial, it is necessary to know that bringing together science and spirituality allows a more holistic (comprehensive) understanding of the world. In various aspects of life, findings of science and spirituality commonly offer a wealth of possibilities of understanding the world and fostering a more harmonious way of living. It resembles a world where people are mentally and physically well. Science focuses on how certain things work and what are those where spiritualists focus on why and delves to find deeper meanings.

Science helps us with our physical health by medicines or treatments they discover everyday that eventually makes our body better. It shows that our thoughts and feelings can affect our physical health. Whereas spirituality focuses on making our minds and emotions healthier. It helps us with things like peace, gratitude, and kindness. It also says that when we think positively and feel connected to something meaningful, it can actually make our bodies healthier. Collaboration of these two different but similar concepts can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life, it can lead to innovative solutions and a deeper appreciation of complexity of existence.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, recognizing the common goal of spirituality and science, ‘understanding the universe and our place on it’ stimulates unity. When both subjects are viewed complimentary rather than conflicting, can create a more inclusive worldview and delivers a roadmap to the existence of the world. By recognizing their unique contributions, we need to find a way for them to work together, which would unlock more possibilities and more knowledge of life mysteries. People can be physically and mentally stable and have a balanced and happy life. In this harmony, science and spirituality become tools for personal growth, collective well-being, and a deeper connection with the world around us.

Why am I the One?
- Sweta Ghimire - 25001, Grade ... 19 January, 2024

Late midnight, working in the office overtime with a project due tomorrow morning, Charlie, intern at a reputed institution was working under a male manager. After getting a degree she got her first internship. She was from an unprivileged background and a woman belonging to a lower ethnic community. Despite all this she was a hardworking and dedicated person.

As she was working alone in the office, she heard a weird sound from the cabin above. She decided to check. One step, another step likewise, she reached in front of the cabin's door. From outside the glass window, she saw an extremely appalling scene which gave her chills from inside. Her manager was abusing and harassing a clerk. She could not believe the sight and tried to go away due to the terror. She accidentally knocked some files and ran which made the manager alert and he caught sight of her. She felt guilty being a coward due to her own reasons. She packed her stuff and decided to complete the project at her apartment.

The very next day Charlie hesitated to go to the office but ended up going. Shockingly everything was normal. Even the clerk was also working normally. Few days passed, and she was assigned to do a new project with the mentor and the manager. She felt anxious. But everything went normal. The project completed and after a month the institution got profit and Charlie was made permanent at the institution. Her cabin was now near the manager's. Charlie was doing well in both professional and personal life. She had completely forgotten the incident.

The institution was invited to a business conference where the representatives of the institution were supposed to go. As Charlie was one of finest employee, she was selected to go to the gathering with the manager. They both went to the conference and represented their institution. But while returning to their respective homes, the manager invited her for a drive. As it was late, she, decided to go with him. She felt ok. But after a few moments she felt uncomfortable as the manager took the route from the forest. As time escalated, she felt being touched by the manager. She couldn’t even react and felt numb. She couldn’t fight back and felt unconscious. Later, Charlie was found by a woman in bad condition: blood all over and wounds at her body, and half dressed. She was basically raped by her manager and thrown near a bush of the forest. Charlie was admitted to the hospital. She was bed rested and was helped by the nurse to overcome mental instability, the trauma. Charlie was facing wide range of emotions which include fear, shame, anxiety, depression, guilt, anger, and a sense of impotent.

She felt that it was her fault to trust a harasser. She felt more depressed that she could not even take any action due to her family situation.

Lastly, causing her to leave a note “Why am I the one?” and jumped off the hospitals top floor. Her body went down, but the soul went up.

A Brief Note on ‘Gosaikunda’
- Samriddha Raj Satyal - 24063, ... 18 January, 2024

Nepal, a country that lies in the laps of the Himalayas is a multilingual, multicultural, multi religious nation. The natural beauty of Nepal is mesmerizing and awful. The mixture of the ecological regions like The Himalayan, The Hilly, and The Terai gives a total canvas of the country. Gosaikunda, a beautiful range of Nepal lies in the Himalayan region and its natural beauty is beyond imagination. For this, it has many travel enticements and tourism prospects which I'll explore in this article.

‘Gosaikunda’ is made up of two words: Gosain and Kunda. ‘Gosain’ means the lord of senses and ‘Kunda’ means a serene lake. It is located in Rasuwa district. According to Hindu mythology, Gosaikunda is the holy lake where the almighty Lord Shiva meditated. It is still believed that Lord Shiva is sleeping inside the holy lake. Every year in the Janai Purnima, hundreds and thousands of Hindu people visit Gosaikunda and find themselves washed out of their sins.

So far about the physical features and the topology of this place, Gosaikunda is located at an altitude of 4380m. It isn't as easy as you think to go there. According to the locals of Gosaikunda, a person definitely dies every year while attempting to trek to Gosaikunda. They also say that the death of the person is the wish of the god. There is a high chance of catching altitude sickness there in Gosaikunda. The thin air and the clouds completely cover the place even in the summer season. The lake is completely frozen in the winter season and tourists visit there to skate too.

About my experience in Gosaikunda, I had fun. Though the journey wasn't so comfortable, I learned to compromise in the hard times. Hotels weren't so good up there, and the food wasn't so tasty but still I learned to accept what I had. Upon reaching there, I saw the secret of nature that I could never imagine. I felt as if I had reached a different world which was completely different and alien to me. When you reach there, you forget all your troubles in the trip. You forget the expense of your travel, you forget the cramps you had on your journey, and most significantly, you forget yourself in the lap of nature. The view was truly amazing and I realized that all the hard times and the painful experience in the trek journey was worth it. I sighed and stepped onto the lake to wash out all my sins as it is said. Though I went on summer days, the water literally froze my brain for some time. I felt freshened, and it was truly an amazing experience.

Overall, Gosaikunda is really a beautiful place, and it should be promoted more for uplifting eco-tourism in Nepal. I would like to draw special attention of the concerned personnel in Nepal Government to add some more facilities in this place so that the visitors would not have difficulties on their stay. Next, I would also like to request all the visitors not to pollute this legendary place which has already earned the emblem of our national pride and heritage. Finally, I would like to suggest everyone to visit this place once in their lifetime to experience eternal beauty.

- Sajiya Tamang - 25065, Grade ... 18 January, 2024

Embracing Guilt
- Aditi Adhikari - 25020, Grade ... 17 January, 2024

They say the most difficult thing to be able to define is guilt. When anyone asks you what guilt is, most often the answer is regret. But how do you define regret? Are both of them the same? Personally speaking, for me regret is a realization of what you should have done instead of what you did. But Guilt is when we feel bad because we think we did something wrong, like lying or making someone sad. It's like a small voice inside us that tells us we did something bad. But sometimes, we might feel guilty even if we didn't do anything bad. If we know why we feel guilty, we can learn how to deal with it.

It is important to recognize that feelings of guilt can sometimes be unfounded, stemming from unreasonable expectations or internalized beliefs. By acknowledging the source of our guilt and critically evaluating its validity, we can begin to address and process these emotions more effectively. Furthermore, seeking support from trusted individuals or professional resources can aid in alleviating feelings of guilt, promoting a healthier emotional state.

However, guilt is a complex emotion that manifests itself in a variety of ways, each with particular details and complexity. Its nature is highlighted by the rise of deeply unsettling emotions which comes from the act of surviving an awful occurrence while others did not. Personal guilt is another factor, which results from the perception of not fulfilling one's parental duties. When someone breaks away from accepted norms, they may experience internal conflict due to cultural and societal guilt that is influenced by outside expectations.

Embracing the journey towards self-forgiveness and seeking support when necessary can play a transformative role in overcoming the weight of guilt. It allows individuals to move forward and cultivate a sense of inner peace. Forgiveness is a profound act that extends beyond oneself, contributing to a more empathetic and compassionate society. Therefore, it is essential to acknowledge the complexities of guilt and recognize the significance of forgiveness in our personal and collective well-being.

Exploring our guilt can lead to a deep understanding of ourselves and others. It opens doors to empathy and compassion, allowing us to connect on a profound level. By acknowledging and addressing our guilt, we pave the way for personal transformation and meaningful relationships. Embracing our guilt as an opportunity for growth enables us to pursue a more enriching and fulfilling life, fostering understanding and acceptance within ourselves and the world around us.

The Making of Superstition
- Anushree Rajbhandari - 24012, ... 16 January, 2024

Superstition is a practice that has been going on for years. It is widely prevalent in Nepal, India, and many other developing countries. We will shortly discuss the concept of superstition and how it originates. If you consider yourself a die-hard cynic, chances are you've believed a superstition or two in your lifetime. But have you ever wondered how these superstitions materialize themselves? Early superstitions were created to address public ignorance and cause mass hysteria. Yes, they were created as a way of understanding or dealing with the fear of the unknown. If you delve deep into history, you'll be surprised to discover that almost every living superstition has its roots in an early religious belief system.

Let’s take an example from Christianity. The number 13 is considered an unlucky number. It is believed that 13 people attended the Last Supper, including Jesus and his 12 apostles. This incident happened before his arrest and death. So the 13th member has started to believe that eating food is inauspicious. At least die within a year! The fear of the number 13 became so prevalent that it is now a medically recognized phobia known as triskaidekaphobia. Whereas in Japan, the number four is considered unlucky.

It can easily be assumed that superstitions have originated since the beginning of humanity. When people face natural disasters such as hurricanes or unexpected diseases, the fear of the unknown has led them to a world of superstitions that may be affected by their actions. It was a kind of attempt to gain control over unexpected events. As humanity evolved, many superstitions were explained scientifically, but that did not mean that this irrational belief system was under control. In fact, during this period these beliefs gained a lot of momentum with the rise of various religions and soon they took an ugly turn with human sacrifice! It was a time when people began to believe that human sacrifice could actually subdue an angry god or that it could bring them prosperity. In Hinduism, the practice of sati originated, where a widowed woman was forced to burn herself with her husband on a pyre. The hold of such beliefs was so strong that some of these practices are still encouraged today if not the sati.

But not all superstitions have religious roots; some were created on individual chance factors. For example, if a person carries the same pen in every exam and happens to score well in every exam, they subconsciously start believing that the pen is their lucky item. Similarly, if a player wears a particular hat in

each of his matches, it can be assumed that this is his lucky outfit. In such a case, it can be believed that future successes will strengthen the superstitious idea. It is belief that strengthens our belief in success or

failure.

Additionally, beyond all such considerations, superstitions may result from parenting. Especially in countries like India and Nepal, superstitions are deeply embedded in our cultural practices. For example, if your childhood parents avoided crossing a black cat, chances are you will too. These are the superstitions that turn into tradition over time and its roots are centuries old. While irrational beliefs parallel our unconscious practices that may overlap in time but have specific causes.

- Isha Shrestha - 25064, Grade ... 16 January, 2024
