- Roji Gurung - 26007, Grade X ... 28 June, 2023

The Roles of The Community in Improving and Preserving The Environment
- Rushina Tamang - 26008, Grade ... 27 June, 2023

The environment is our home. This is where we live and survive. The environment has given us food, shelter, family and a place to live in. Everything from the first living beings to the creation of human and animals and the development of society occurred in this environment. We might have built a house, community and country, but our environment is the foundation. We wouldn’t survive a minute without the soil we stand on, the sky above our heads or the air we breathe every second. The environment has given us so much and it is only fair if we give it back.

I personally live in a less populated area. My house is on the top of a hill. Which is surrounded by trees, jungles and vegetation. The roads don’t provide much space for cars and buses to drive through so vehicles don’t usually drive on the roads of my community. People are very peaceful here and love the greenery that surrounds them. They love the jungles, the trees, the plants and the animals that come with it. We can find various animals in the jungles that have made the woods their home. Like monkeys, snakes, squirrels, rabbits, and beetles. People love to go on hikes in those jungles. We love how less populated the area is. But what I don’t like about the people of my area is that they don’t protect or care about the environment they love.

They litter plastic and food bags everywhere. Every time I go on a hike, I always see one or two plastic bottles and polythene bags littered. The roads are deconstructed and destroyed. The ponds are dirty in the jungle. And people do nothing about it. People love the idea of going for a hike in the woods but when it comes to maintaining the ecosystem in that jungle they all start turning a blind eye to the situation. We have taken so many fun experiences and resources from that jungle. The environment in the area has provided a homely place for us. People own farms here and maintain the crops like raising a child, why can't they do the same thing for the jungles that surround our habitat?

We have to care for our own environment. We have to take care of our environment like we take care of our home or even ourselves. The environment means everything to living beings. We have to stop people from cutting down jungles and killing animals for their benefit. We cannot put a blind eye to this situation anymore as it has actually become a global crisis now. The emission of chlorofluorocarbons has covered our atmosphere with harmful gases making the atmosphere thinner and thinner. They are killing the forest’s ecosystem. People are killing millions for their few thousand-dollar benefits. At this pace, our future generations will not survive nor see the environment we love so much. Harming the environment is harming us but we are still not stopping. Why? It is because of the capitalist society we live in. We value money more than our lives and future. We are not seeing how we are putting our own homes on fire. Money doesn’t mean everything. During the time of death, our money doesn’t follow us.

We have to make a change. We have to start making impacts. We have to start doing movements and raising our voices on this matter. But, in a way that benefits everyone. We do not need to vandalize other properties to save our own. We have learned a way to influence the world to save our planet in a way that is not harming anyone or anything but impacting everyone in a positive way. We have to start implementing rules about throwing litter on public and private property, we have to start initiating strict rules against environmental pollution. We have to start influencing people into utilizing electric vehicles that do not produce chlorofluorocarbons. We have to clean up our mistakes and give back to our home and environment by taking care of it.

Medusa: The Snake-Haired Monster and Perseus
- Riti Niraula - 27029, Grade I ... 26 June, 2023

Medusa is the name we have primarily heard in the ancient stories of Greek Mythology. Medusa was a monster also known as the ‘Gorgon’. She had three sisters who were also the Gorgons, known as ‘The Three Gorgons Sisters’. They all lived together at the end of the world or on the island in the middle of Poseidon's great ocean. The other sisters are not mentioned much in Greek mythology as much as Medusa is.

Before turning into a Gorgon, Medusa was a woman known for her beauty and was a mortal. One day Medusa went to the temple of Athena to worship. When she was there, Poseidon saw her, he was amazed by her beauty then seduced and raped her, and soon after, she became pregnant. Athena was mad at her for violating the temple, so she turned her into a mortal gorgon. She then was no longer beautiful and she turned into a monster who had snakes for her hair and would turn anyone into stone if they looked at her directly. Although there are many myths that say that Athena was jealous of Medusa’s beauty hence she was turned into an ugly monster, other myths say that Athena did what she did so that nobody would harm Medusa ever again. It is highly debatable but the fact is that she ‘punished’ the victim and not the perpetrator. Killing a Gorgon who had the ability to turn anyone into stone and whose sisters were immortal sounds like a task almost impossible, but Perseus was able to do it by using his weapon a single time. Perseus was the son of Zeus and a human princess named Danae. A man who wanted to marry Perseus’s mother challenged him to bring the head of the Gorgon, and young Perseus agreed. Perseus had no clue where to find the snake-haired monster but he was assisted by his two half-siblings Athena and Hermes. Athena gave him the bronze shield and Hermes gave him the winged sandals. Then he went to the place where ‘The Three Gorgons Sister’ lived. All three sisters were born with only one eye which they shared with each other, and only one tooth they took turns eating. Perseus knew about it, and when Medusa was sleeping and the other two sisters were passing the eye between each other and safeguarding the place, Perseus snatched the eye at the right time and told them he would give it to them if they told the information he needed. He went to the place after a while when all the three sisters were sleeping and when he found the right moment he cut her throat and killed her without directly looking into her eyes.

After that, he gave returned the god’s gift back to Athena and also gave the gorgon head as a reward.

Are Protests More Harmful Than Beneficial?
- Manaswi Sapkota - 26004, Grad ... 23 June, 2023

Protests are a powerful move to show what you believe in. It is an action that helps you fight for what you think is right. Protests often result in socio-economic changes; they change the politics of a country and the mindset of the locals. They also cause violence among certain groups of people. Some protests are just not effective because they are executed terribly.

Protests usually disturb the normal flow of a place as during protests, people are on the roads fighting for what they believe is right. These protests often lead to traffic jams, fights with law enforcement, etc., which can polarize the opinion of the bystander because due to the protest, the roads are blocked and they can't get anywhere on time. This might lead to resentment towards the protester, and there might be no regard for the content being protested.

Major protests are always verbal, but sometimes protests get out of hand, and every once in a while, a brawl breaks out between opposing parties of the protesters. These fights not only hurt those involved but also harm the bystanders. Vandalism, theft, burning of properties, etc., also take place during protests sometimes. This also makes the bystanders question the reason behind the protest, and instead of taking a side, the bystander will only continue hating on the campaign as a whole. This kind of protest only uses the public as a source of hate for the protesters.

Cases like the Extinction Rebellion's protests really show the general saying of "good ideas, executed badly." They protested against climate change, and the idea of the protest itself is good, but they protested terribly, vandalizing property, blocking major roads, and the public transportation system.

Another reason why today's protests are more harming than rewarding is the carbon footprint they leave behind. To organize such high-scale protests, activists have to use transportation, energy, fuel, etc., which only contradicts their reason behind the protest. These resources are unsustainable for a protest as they leave behind carbon footprints. These resources could also be used in other sectors that need them more. Due to this, protests should be done without the emission of carbon footprints.

Digital activism is one of the most sustainable ways of protest as of now, especially after the rise of apps like TikTok, which help in spreading information to people all around the world. Online petitions, virtual events, etc., help reduce the carbon footprint as they remove all the reasons for the use of transportation, energy consumption, and an increase in waste. Of course, digital activism isn't possible everywhere, so there are other ways to remove carbon footprints while protesting. Sustainable transportation, awareness campaigns, and sustainable materials are all ways to not leave behind our carbon footprints.

Protests play a significant role in changing the social dynamic of a society and bringing justice to those who need it. Protests should be peaceful yet bold and strong. Violence and the lack of composure only make it easier for the general public to ignore your protests easily. So to prove a point protests must be done without violence and only then will they be effective.

- Manaswi Sapkota - 26004, Grad ... 22 June, 2023

Who is Linda O’Keefe?
- Sonam Sunner - 27017, Grade I ... 22 June, 2023

On July 6, 1973, Linda O'Keefe, a young girl at the age of eleven got ready for Newport, beach, california. She was going to summer school in this location. Linda had two sisters, and was a very talented girl who loved art. She was wearing a dress her mom had made for her and soon her piano teacher would be picking her up.

It was a short distance from home to school, but sadly Linda walking home was her last seen alive. A man had found her body in a ditch. The police have been investigating for a while now and each path has led to nothing but just a dead end. After 45 years, On Linda’s Death anniversary, The police announced that they would be doing a DNA test to search and find the killer. And the police started to spread awareness about this situation, to do so, they used twitter, a social media app. They described Linda’s last day from her point of view on the app. They basically wrote about how on her last day, she had to stay at school for piano lessons, and how she wanted to call her mom to pick her up but since she couldn't use the phone at that time, she just waited. Then later on, Linda’s friend, Brenda saw her and a van stop next to Linda, but she was too far away to see if Linda talked to the van driver or not. Then later, Linda asked her mom for a ride but since her mom was busy, she walked home. Which was sadly to be the last time anyone saw her. However, her mom did call the police, so the police had questioned many people, and one of the few was a girl named Jannie. Jannie and her mom had seen Linda sitting next to a turquoise van, and Jannie’s mother thought something was wrong so parked her car next to it as well. Then the van started leaving, She couldn’t tell if Linda was in the car but neither was she sitting out as well. The van drove quickly so Jannie’s mom couldn’t tell what the License plate number was.

There was also another witness. A woman had heard a scream near Newport Beach, but she didn’t pay attention to it. Then, as I said earlier, a man had seen his body and called the police right after.  45 years have passed and now they are using a DNA method called DNA phenotyping. After Linda’s DNA was submitted, A guy named James Alan Neal was a huge suspect. Neal then was arrested after his DNA was matched to Linda’s. After 45 years, they finally found the culprit to Linda O’keefe’s murder. If you’re wondering why they didn’t use DNA phenotyping before. Well, this was back in 1973, this technology was something they lacked. In 1984, This was finally invented and in 2018, they used this method to solve Linda O’Keefe’s death. There is even a movie made inspired from this case called “the lovely bones”.

Are older people as considerate about the environment as younger people?
- Roji Gurung - 26007, Grade X ... 21 June, 2023

The environment has been degrading day by day. Every year news about climate change circulates around the earth. Young people are always seen protesting about the environment around the cities. But why do only younger people seem to care about the environment? Are the older generations not considerate about the environment? The answer to this question is yes.

Majority of the older people tend to forget about the situation of the environment or they just stop caring about it. Younger people become more concerned about the environment after turning 18. Research has shown that people stop being concerned about climate change once we reach our 40s. Let's take an example of Greta Thunberg and Donald Trump. Back in 2019 a young girl named Greta Thunberg gave a passionate speech about how worried she was about the state of the earth in the UN. That speech went viral. Donald Trump, who in his seventies, criticized Greta for the speech she made. Research has shown that this may be because of their ages. As people age they care less about the dying planet and give less concern about the environment. Younger generations are more likely to take climate change as a personal issue and be active on climate movements. Since many government employees are above the age of 35, they too do not seem to care about the environment. The older people usually feel so because for them it's no use for their future. They would want to do everything before dying which would make them do things that are not eco-friendly. This impacts the future of the environment. As for the younger generations they want a better future for themselves and their future generations. Young people are health conscious, socially and mentally aware about the environment. They are all about better health, safe environment, eco-friendly surroundings, and healthy lifestyles at present and also in future. These young generations are more critical on what to do rather than the older generations. They know what is good and bad for them. This is also one reason why they look for a better lifestyle. Older people seem to have attitudes so they would not listen to what others say and be as irresponsible as they please. According to the research, it is believed that the difference between the mindset about climate change between older and young generations is the generational events. Older generations too were young once. They too might have fought for the environment. But as we go through the past there seems to be no changes in the climate. This may be the reason the older generation stopped fighting because they know it is useless and there would not be any changes.
