Why Are Suicide Cases Rising In Nepal?
- Ashish Dahal - 27004, Grade I ... 18 July, 2023

According to a research 10% of Nepalese people have suicidal thoughts. Although many people have mental illness in Nepal, the Nepal government has not even given 1% of its economy to the sector of mental health.

Nepal although it might look peaceful but inside it is very unpleasant. Just a few months ago a guy committed suicided in front of the legislative building by burning himself. Nepal’s suicide rate in 10 years has significantly increased. In 2011 there were 11 deaths per day but now it has increased by 19 deaths per day. Now a days where ever we go we hear about the cases of suicide deaths or even attempts of suicide. Of which 90 percent are because of depression. So why is the depression rate so high in Nepal? According to the census 56% of people who die because of depression are male then 36% are women, 7% are adolescent girls and 4% are boys. The reason for the high cause of deaths of male are because of family reasons, responsibility and debt. Male members are directly and indirectly pressured to ‘take care’ of their family and along the way forget to take care of their own selves. The society is patriarchal because of that we can see many domestic violence and cases of sexual abuses because of those reasons there are high percent of suicide. (ofcourse not all suicides are caused due to these reasons). During the pandemic suicide rate was at its peak in Far Western Nepal and Karnali districts. As many people were who used to work in India and when the border was closed because of debt and the people could not  bear the expenses of family they committed suicide as a way out. Now coming back to the chart 7% of those who suicide were because of failed relationship, unwanted pregnancy, or because of the pressure of school including bullying at schools via peers and teachers. Lately, the rise of suicide due to social media is also widely prevalent.

Conservation Of Environment
- Surabhi Ghimire - 26012, Grad ... 17 July, 2023

The progress in science, technology, and natural phenomena caused by humans is commendable. No achievement is possible without risks. Sometimes they're worth it due to "evolution" while they hamper the environment and organisms present in it immensely. At times, the environment being hampered can result in serious situations. The Canadian fire hazards–though it is a work of nature, we slowly caused it to break down by testing possibilities for more evolution, and due to that fire, NYC (New York City) is also being affected.

I believe everything we do has a consequence, however small it may be.  Even in this circumstance, we have been trying to stop climate change. We have been trying to recoil from our actions, and it's still far from okay.  Though, I've only ever heard of petitions against climate change. Turns out, Nepal has announced it will achieve 0 emissions by 2045 as well as India currently aiming to cut its GDP's emissions intensity by 45% by 2030. Other different countries have made similar announcements regarding climate change and environmental conservation. The scary thing is that if we somehow manage to reach the point where climate change isn't affecting us anymore, the harm is irreversible. Sure, we could try to lessen it, but there is no guarantee that it'll get better.  It makes me wonder what it'll be like if we never tried.

Would it be worse? Better? In this case, the hypothetical situation is extreme and affecting.  I believe everything we do has a consequence, how small it may be.  Though we focus on evolution, it makes no impact if one day the climate causes the earth to be inhabitable. All the work done by scientists, researchers, and mathematicians will prove to be pointless.  With such an impactful change, the earth we know may not remain the same. Its lifespan may be reduced by years, resulting in earlier destruction of the civilizations present on Earth. If the environment was not conserved at all, from the beginning, we would face catastrophic consequences. Ecosystems would collapse, leading to the extinction of countless species. Air and water pollution would skyrocket, causing health issues for humans as well as other organisms. Climate change would worsen, resulting in extreme weather events. It is crucial to prioritize environmental conservation to ensure a sustainable future for our planet. Still, in the present, ecosystems ARE slowly collapsing. Undeniably, species are also extinct. This makes me wonder if our process of dealing with climate change and environmental crises is actually effective. Are we dealing with it in the right way? Are the higher-ups aware of this situation? Do they care enough to be serious about it? I wonder.

Janai Purnima
- Adhyaya Bhandari - 27031, Gra ... 04 July, 2023

Janai Purnima is a festival celebrated by Hindus. This festival mostly lies in the month of Shrawan but sometimes it lies in the month of  Bhadra as per the Hindu calendar. This festival is also known as Rakshya Bandhan mostly in India and Kwati Purnima in Nepal. This day is special for males of the Brahmin and Chhetri families. They go to the river side to bathe and purify themselves. It is also believed that this purifies our soul. When changing the Janai we need to look at the sun and in complete silence that too. If not, it is believed that bad things will happen. After that they go to the temple and worship the new Janai which they will wear until the next festival. The people who cannot go in the river or the temple , they bathe and change their janai at the comfort of their homes. After changing the Janai the respective person has to repeat the mantra he was taught during his Bratabandha for 108 times. People also donate rice to the Brahmans. It is believed that men who wear Janai, can control their conscience and body. After the religious practices are complete, they also go to their relatives' homes and make merry. The festival is special for Lord Vishnu because it is believed that whoever has done their brata bandha the person is also considered as the Avatar of Vishnu. In the olden days, it was said that Janai helped us be safe, as the mantras cast on to by our gurus kept us safe from any external harm. Janai is also called Bramhasutra or the rope of knowledge. If we fail to change janai it is considered to be a bad omen. After coming home we eat Kwati made up of 9 different types of beans and it is said that our body will not come in contact with cold after bathing in the river and being in thin clothing throughout the ritual. If the Janai breaks then we need to change it as soon as possible and like in the changing process without donning it we can’t speak. Although accidents happen and the janai does break is not bad, however, the janai we worship and change on this auspicious day is said to have much more power within it compared to a janai we change on any other day.

Should The Government Be Solely Responsible For Protecting The Environment?
- Sauharda Bajracharya - 26010, ... 03 July, 2023

Everyone has different opinions on should the government be responsible for protecting the environment or should an individual be responsible for it. In my opinion, the government should be accountable for protecting the environment. However, they should not be solely responsible for it, all of us have to partly be responsible for protecting the environment. It will be beneficial if the government and individuals both part-take in preserving and protecting the environment.

Climate change was not a problem decades ago, but today, excessive carbon emissions from industries and factories are destroying the present world and perhaps the future world as well. Global warming has been affecting all parts of the world, glaciers are melting in Antarctica, sea levels are rising, and more intense droughts are being seen in different parts of the world. As temperature rises over time, it disrupts the normal balance of nature. This poses many risks to humans and all other life forms on Earth. Heat strokes have taken the lives of thousands of people, and floods and droughts have affected many parts, destroying homes and livelihoods.

The factors affecting climate change are burning fossil fuels, deforestation, excessive carbon emissions, chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs), etc. All of these factors have a major impact on the earth, vehicles, and different industries burn a lot of fossil fuels which pollutes the environment. Millions of means of transportation are used each day and millions of tons of fossil fuels are burned everyday. Deforestation is another major cause of climate change, every year more than 10 billion trees are cut down. This causes an imbalance in the ecosystem and affects the climate as well. Trees are cut down to make large-scale projects which develop a country; however, they are destroying the world along with that. Large-scale projects require large amounts of resources which are produced by industries and factories, however, these industries and factories emit lots of carbon dioxide which harms the environment. CFCs are produced by things in our own homes .i.e refrigerators and air conditioners. They give us relief from heat however in return, they heat the earth. At one point, due to the large number of CFCs, the ozone layer has been depleted.

Climate change has been negatively affecting the environment, but who should be responsible for protecting and removing it entirely? Should the government solely be responsible for it or should all of the people be responsible for it? In my point of view, the government and individuals should both equally be responsible for it. Governments can play a crucial role in protecting the environment, they can take the initiative of planting more trees to make a clean and green environment. We can help them along the way by planting trees ourselves as well.

Government can encourage factories and industries to shift to rural areas or the countryside rather than urban areas which are already polluted by vehicles. We can also use electric vehicles rather than petroleum vehicles to make a clean environment. Government can create TV programs that educate and inform people of the effects of climate change. We can minimize the use of plastic by using paper bags instead of plastic bags. Individuals can create groups to protest for a clean and green environment as well. In conclusion, joint efforts of both government and citizens can provide a safe and protected environment.

व्यवसायमुखी कृषि
- Suprabh Acharya - 27014, Grad ... 03 July, 2023

The Chest
- Aayotrie Chaudhary - 27019, G ... 30 June, 2023

It was a Saturday morning in the Brewer’s residence and Margaret was eating her breakfast, poached eggs and bell pepper with some fruit kebabs she made using some of the leftover fruits in the kitchen. The fruit kebab was made out of rasberries, blackberries, bananas, and some fresh tangerine slices. Her brother was sitting next to her at the kitchen island eating scrambled eggs and a cinnamon roll with some extra whipped cream on top, he even added honey drizzle on top of all of it. Their father had already gone to work, he didn’t have Saturday off, only Sundays. Their mom was upstairs with their baby sister Florence. Margaret finished her breakfast and headed upstairs into her bedroom where she started to comb her light brown hair. After she finished she decided to go downstairs again, however when she saw her mom standing with her hands on her hips, Margaret realized it may have been a mistake to come down. Her mom looked at her sternly before letting out a huff and lecturing Margaret about how she was being lazy and that she needed to do something for once. Margaret felt a lump in her throat, this wasn’t the first time her mom had said this to her, Margaret had always tried to be better. She started focusing on little things at a time, eating healthier, maintaining good posture, combing her unruly hair before being told to do so, it wasn’t enough. Whenever Margaret tried to rush things, she would only make a bigger mess and end up accomplishing nothing at all. She really wanted to be better, be smarter and be more responsible, but it was hard. Not just the type of hard where you need to work hard to overcome it in just a day, hard like you may need to struggle with it your whole life before you can finally improve. Just thinking about her troubles made her head hurt. Though it was obvious her mom wanted to continue to scold her, her mom just sent her off and told her to help clean the attic.

Margaret went up the attic stairs which creaked beneath her feet and sneezed as soon as she reached the top due to all the dust that had been piling up there. After sneezing a few more times Magaret reached a window and opened it in a hurry. Finally, she got to work on dealing with the actual items in the attic. On most items there were tarps that used to be a white color, now they were stained with dirt and dust like most things in the old unswept attic. From the corner of her eye she suddenly spotted something. There was a box, no, not just a simple box, a chest. The chest was made out of dark oak which, covered by the heaps of dust, looked almost like the color of the attic roof. There were also a few gold markings as well on the chest. Margaret suddenly had a strong urge to, well, open it. She was about to creak it open when her mom walked up into the attic and saw her staring at the chest. For some reason her mom got extremely enraged and almost seemed scared of what would happen if Margaret opened the chest. She quickly yelled at Margaret to take a shower to get rid of all the dust that had landed on her. Margaret was stunned, she got up quickly and rushed down the creaky stairs. What could be in the chest? This thought rang through her mind at least a dozen times as she showered. Once she was done showering she walked out of her room and was immediately met by her mom. Instead of yelling her mom actually looked at her softy, even patted her head and told her that she had popped some popcorn downstairs. Margaret found this behavior to be a tad bit suspicious but she just shrugged it off and went down to enjoy some of the popcorn her mom had prepared.
Later in the evening her mom and dad decided to go to a restaurant leaving Margaret in charge, her mother made sure to emphasize the importance of not going in the attic while they were gone. Once they had left Margaret prepared her little siblings their dinner which was some leftover spaghetti from the night before. Her parents had forgotten to buy meatballs so instead they added some cooked sausages into the light yellow colored noodles and red tomato sauce. After a while she sent them off to bed, tucking in her little sister herself.  She sat in the living room for a bit when she just suddenly felt a really strong urge to see what was in the chest. Her parents wouldn't be back until later, so, who could stop her? Slowly she got up, opened the stairs to the attic, and crawled up the stairs trying to not make it squeak or it would wake up her brother and sister. Finally she reached the top and tiptoed to the chest. She put her hands on the cold wood, and opened the chest.

Inside the chest were documents. At first Margret was confused, why did her parents want to hide old documents from her, then, she took a closer look. They were her documents, not just documents, they were missing people flyers and addresses. They were hers, they had photos of her when she was only a child. She saw the address of the missing child and without a second thought, closed the chest, went down the stairs, and went to her bedroom to sleep. She would go the next morning, it would be too hard at night. The next morning she acted normal, she tried not to alert “her parents”. Finally she managed to leave the house, and she set off on the journey to find her real parents, the ones that had been looking for her for years.

Tesla’s Noble Work
- Riddhis Sharma - 26006, Grade ... 29 June, 2023

Nicolas Tesla was a great scientist who discovered many of the things we use today.  Born on July 10, 1856, Smiljan, Croatia, Tesla was a poor man . He had no money back then. He studied in Gimnazija Karlovac from 1870 to 1873  and studied in TU Graz from 1875 to 1878. He had to drop out of the college due to lack of funds in the second year.

People often liked to call Tesla the mad scientist as he had ideas that no other person at the time had. One of these unbelievable ideas was the idea of the Wardenclyffe Tower. Tesla was a great enthusiast. He believed that the great pyramid of Giza was made for a purpose. So he started making the Wardenclyffe tower with the reference of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Colorado where he did all of his crazy experiments. These experiments were quite dangerous so he moved out there to do these tests. Tesla believed that the Great Pyramid of Giza was a stand for a sort of tower from which electricity could be supplied all around the world so as his reference was the Pyramid the Wardenclyffe tower’s top looked like a pyramid. His plan was to make a tower that was large enough to supply electricity to the whole world but later due to lack of financial support, his ideas failed.

Later studies of this showed that he actually wanted to supply energy to the whole world through the ground which is impossible according to the physics we now know. Ground is a good insulator in most parts of the world, but there was water beneath both the great pyramid and the Wardenclyffe tower which made the ground a conductor, which was a great coincidence. Back at the time, the ground having the properties of both insulator and conductor was an unknown topic which led to the failure of the Wardenclyffe tower.  If his plans succeeded then the business of many people would collapse which included the man who was funding the tower, so he stopped funding the tower and the process was at a halt. Even though these things were far from possible, Tesla’s imagination played a fundamental role in wireless communication.

If the world was provided with wireless electricity, then there would be less vehicles that used fossil fuels and more Electric Vehicles. As such the price of these vehicles would decrease as well, leading to a better environment for the upcoming generations. Also if the electricity was wireless, these cables that we use would be unnecessary and the environment would take a turn for the better.  Even though Tesla’s ideas failed back then, there are small prototypes now that use the same principle of transmitting electricity through electromagnetic waves through the air and ground . And even though these prototypes work on a small scale there is no guarantee that it will work out later on a much larger scale. If by any chance, Tesla had succeeded, then the Earth would be a far better place for us and all of the organisms that reside here.
