Culinary Art: Dismantling Stereotype
- Prashraya Shrestha - 26014, G ... 06 December, 2021

Preparing, Cooking, presenting and serving of food is known as culinary and culinary arts simply means the art of culinary. Cooking previously known as a gender role has been formed into a profession socially accepted for all genders and nationality. It is a respectable job and people can earn a fortune from this industry.

Culinary arts focus on small details and changes in a food. Masters in this art are given Michelin stars. Michelin stars is a rating system which focuses on the hospitality, cleanliness, food and overall changes of a restaurant. (Currently there are only 2,651 restaurants who possess at least one of these stars). These stars are very hard to get and you can lose them if your cooking standards decrease but the people who have a single Michelin star have a great upper hand in the cooking industry. Culinary artists also known as chefs or cooks are responsible for obtaining these stars. Chefs are the people who perform culinary arts as a profession. They are trained individuals and can make anything seem good and delicious. Some of the culinary artists are also celebrities and have their own cookbook, tv shows .etc These cookbooks and tv shows inspire many other young people who want to cook but are unsure if culinary arts is a safe profession to pursue as culinary arts isn't the safest option to pick due to the high increase in competition in this field. In my view anyone can cook if they have the right techniques and ingredients but an individual should have creative thinking and experience to tackle the problem because culinary art is an unexpectable place where the smallest of details matter and people need high amounts of skill and practice to master.
In conclusion, cooking is not a gender role and if we still think it is, we clearly should come out of our stereotypical mindset and learn the fact that cooking is not just a skill but it also is an ART.

Sappho, The First Lesbian
- Surabhi Ghimire - 26012, Grad ... 03 December, 2021

It's not necessary that everyone has the same sexuallity, that is probably what Sappho thought. Sappho, the first lesbian was an Archaic Greek poet from Eresos or Mytilene on an island of lesbos. She was known for her lyrical poetry, for writing about romance. In 650-500BC, she was known as the “Tenth Muse”. Lyric poetry is a bit of a stand out compared to other classics of back then. It doesn’t have the name recognition of the others but it’s a style we can easily get a gist of. The formal definition is poetry performed with musical accompaniment from the lyre. Sappho wrote about her experiences, about love. The earliest Sappho’s survival comes from a Byzantine encyclopedia written in the 10th century. She was born around 630 BC and died in about 570 BC. Her poems had been burnt because of the people in her town being homophobic but we do have one of Sapphos complete poem, ‘Ode to aphrodite’ which was until archaeologists discovered the two new poems in the past two decades, ‘The brothers room’ and ‘The Kyprio’ . Her lines have so many feelings in them, her poem ‘Fragment 31’ is my personal favourite. Sappho was a lesbian but the world “Lesbian” wasn’t even use to describe relationships between women until the 19th and the early 20th centuries.
Fragment 31 :
‘He seems like gods equal, that man,
Whoever he is, who takes his seat so close across from you,
And listens to your litting voice.
And lovely laughter, which, as it wafts by,
Sets the heart in my rib cage fluttering.
As soon as I glance at you a moment,
I can't say a thing.’
Here she's talking about a man who she thought was godlike because the man’s seat was so close to Aphrodite's, whereas Sappho’s heart would flutter from far away just listening to her lovely laughter. Personally hearing these or reading these poems makes me really happy, the phrases she uses like “Sets the heart in my rib cage fluttering” are really interesting. I read somewhere that the girl she was in love with aka Aphrodite along with most of the poems were burnt when the people in their town found out about their homosexuality. We don’t know anything for sure because we only have bits and pieces of information but I say we are still lucky to have some of Sappho’s poems, she was a great poet.

Movie Review : Cruella
- Sonam Sunner - 27017, Grade V ... 02 December, 2021

Cruella is a Disney movie. It is a 2021 American crime comedy film. The release date of the movie ‘Cruella’ is May 18 2021. This movie is about a young girl who got revenge. It started when Estella was a young girl who was just 12 years old. But she and her mom had completely different personalities. However Estella still loved her mom. Her mom was very kind and sweet but Estella was a bit mean or sometimes rude. Estella had half black and half white hair while her mom didnt. Estella also had an interest in being a fashion designer. Whenever Estella was a bit rude, her mom said “that’s rude, you're not Cruella’. One day Estella got expelled from her school because of her behavior. Then they left for London. Before they stop at the city her mom said that she needs to stop somewhere for help from a friend because of the situation they were in. As they were driving, Estella saw that they were entering somewhere. It had a sign on the top and it said ‘Hellman Hall’. It was on a small island. As they parked, She saw a huge castle-like building, it looked like it was some event. Before her mom got out of her car, she took off her necklace and gave Estella to wear it. But Estella had to stay in her car while her mom went to talk to her friend. Estella wanted to see what was going on so she went and followed her mom sneakily. She hid under a table of cake with a cloth on the table so they couldn’t see her. When they entered she saw a huge hall, it was like a fashion show. She could tell it was the most famous fashion show. But then she went away from the table because her dog ran somewhere. Some 3 dalmatian dogs saw it and chased her. She chased her until she went outside. When she went outside her mom was standing on the edge of a balcony. And beside her was the baroness, the owner of Hallman Hall. when the baroness silently whistles for her trained dalmatian dogs. When she whistled the 3 dalmatian dogs ran outside. Estella was hiding behind a bush, and then saw the three dalmatian dogs push her mom from the balcony falling into the sea. After her mom was killed she begins her own transformation to Cruella. This story is interesting and is very impressive. It is entertaining and creative. I recommend this movie to all. This story is mostly about revenge.

- Anushree Acharya - 28002, Gra ... 02 December, 2021

Book Review : Animal Farm
- Manaswi Sapkota - 26004, Grad ... 01 December, 2021

Animal Farm written by George Orwell in the year 1940s starts with letting us know that Old Major, a pig of the farm Mr.Jones owned, was telling animals about the rebellion about to happen against humans. He also teaches the animals of the farm a rebellion song called ‘Beasts of England.’ Animals sing this song in every meeting held to plan the rebellion. When the animals finally take over the farm, things turn more complicated. The pigs took the lead on the rebellion battle as they were smart and had learnt letters and words but one of the pigs named Snowball was kicked out from the farm as he wanted to make a windmill. (Snowball was the only pig or animal that was smart enough to predict things and treated all animals equally.) After Snowball was kicked out Napoleon, the pig who kicked Snowball out, became the  leader of the farm.

That's when things took a huge turn. All the other animals had to work 24/7 to achieve their dream of making a windmill while the pigs ate all their good food and did mostly nothing. When someone talked against Napoleon his dogs would try and attack the animals. The windmill was broken and blamed Snowball who had fled. The animals had started getting sad but there was Boxer who was a strong horse who kept saying “I will work harder” which gave the animals motivation but at the end Boxer fell because he was so ill. Napoleon sends Boxer to a slaughter house. All the animals cry and become extremely sad. At the end the system Napoleon had didn't change and many animals continued dying because of him, Napoleon had become like a human like someone who only cared about one’s self and didn’t care about equality.

This book describes our government/ country a lot. Everywhere we look there’s always an amount of corruption present in our surroundings. This book doesn’t just talk about corruption, it also talks about how there is so much greed in this world. Living beings, especially humans, don't care about others' problems. We take advantage of people we don’t even care about, we belittle others and tell the society that it's for our well being while it is not. We become like the pigs in the story. We become ruthless and unapologetic for our wrong doings. The story tells us to not be like the pigs, it tells us to sympathize with others, it tells us to care about others rather than just ourselves or else chaos surrounds us everywhere we go. This story tells us to fight back for our rights and never give up speaking for ourselves and at the same time should never fall for the words of our corrupted leaders who care least about citizens' well being.

This book is really interesting as we keep on reading it. It dives into many topics that are so relatable to us and our society such as corruption and misuse of power (when Napoleon uses his position to justify his wrongdoing). We can relate to every character of the book with our individual nature. Some of us are like Boxer who blindly believes in his leader. Some of us are like Molie who wouldn’t  like to come out of our comfort zones and do something for change and so on. So, we somehow resemble the characters in Animal Farm.  It particularly  tells us how taking wrong routes and choosing wrong leaders could result in our dark future. This is a must read book.

- Riddhis Sharma - 26006, Grade ... 01 December, 2021

Variants of Discrimination in Nepali Society
- Rushina Tamang - 26008, Grade ... 30 November, 2021

There are many issues in Nepali society. Even though Nepal is one of the most developing countries in the world. It still lives in the past. The thinking style in Nepali Society is very old. People still live from past thoughts. There is gender discrimination, body shaming, caste discrimination, social profile discrimination, etc. even though we don’t mean it, we still say these things without acknowledgment. It’s a sad thing to say but shaming people and discriminating them has become our habit because of our societie’s influence. It starts from our own home. If a son is born he can relax in the house and doesn’t have to do any household chores. But if a daughter is born she is expected to do every household work. Our own parents expect us to do every household or just because we’re a girl. And they always nag us with the phrase, ‘being a GIRL’.  They think that cooking can only be done by girls. But in reality household chores don't have a gender, nor does cooking. Anyone can do this work. These words are required to be known by any human. Someone will have to do this work one day or another. You cannot live life without knowing how to do any household chores.

Next is color discrimination. Right from when we are born we are just upon our skin color. Everyone reminds us if we are black and compliments us if we are white. Especially our own religious justice on our color. They say phrases like, ‘Oh! You look black’. And it’s very wrong to comment on somebody’s skin color. It’s just their skin. It’s because of our genetics. There are words being used like ‘Kalay’ or ‘Madhisay, ' people used to tease dark colored skin people. Our society thinks that having dark skin is bad and white skin is good. Every skin color is beautiful.

Now let’s talk  about body shaming. Right, especially when we hit our teenage years, our bodies start to change. Some Of us gain weight and some of us are very skinny. Some of us get tall and others remain short. But no matter what it’s our own body and no one has the right to judge our body. No matter what our body shape is, we should not get shamed for it. Our relatives should never shame us or comment on our body. Nepali society is famous for passing comments on whether we look  fat or even skinny. They even shame us for being short or tall. And these are the main reasons why people have insecurities, because their body type cannot fit the ideal body image the society has. And it hurts our feelings if someone comments on our body.

Another overlooked issue is caste discrimination. Caste discrimination is the biggest problem in Nepal. Since past times people have been categorized into lower and higher castes and have been discriminated against. Especially the castes  that were placed into untouchables or the dalits they were the most discriminated against. They couldn’t enter temples, they were forbidden to touch others. They were only allowed to work looping jobs and had to face other discriminations. They still have to go through this today. Shouldn’t we start having discussions and discourses on this issue already?

Next is social profile discrimination. In Nepali society everyone is expected to be a doctor or an engineer. How to have a high-paying job. Kids are expected to have high scores in their studies. If these people don’t meet these expectations they are noted as lazy or unsuccessful. If someone works in a factory or a house building job, they are immediately seen as poor people. If someone doesn't have high scores in their studies, they get compared with others and get called different names that say lazy or someone who doesn't do hard work. But in reality every job is equal. And no one should get compared to anyone. Because every human is different and everyone has their own speciality. We can do any job we want as long as it makes us happy.

This is our Nepali society. There are more things we are discriminated against but these are the regular things that have corrupted our blood and minds. These have to be removed from our society and moral action has to be taken against anyone who treats people indifferently. However, the first step we can do to change this is to start talking about these issues and make people realize that we are still living with the 17th century mindset.

- Eshanee Manandhar - 28004, Gr ... 30 November, 2021

History of Math
- Prasiddha Shrestha - 28008, G ... 29 November, 2021

Math was discovered around 3000 BC. It was used for managing time, keeping track of sales etc. Since then math has evolved. Math is a very complex subject. It has different methods as well. It is a very important subject in society. Math helps us improve logical reasoning, critical thinking, creative thinking ,problem solving ability etc .Math is linked with everything in our daily life. Math can be divided into many parts like algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, calculus, statistics and probability.

Math has a close connection with Physics and Chemistry. They all are very similar but a little different .Math helps us to understand the universe.

The person who has a lot of knowledge of mathematics is called a Mathematician. Being a mathematician is  a very hard job.Throw out the history of math there have been many talented mathematicians like Carl Friedrich Gauss, Leonhard Euler, Isaac Newton, Archimedes, Terence Tao ,Pythagoras etc.

People have linked math to many things. Leonardo da Vinci has mathematical things connected to some of his artworks.

The Collatz Conjecture, Dave Linkletter, Goldbach's Conjecture, Creative Commons, The Twin Prime Conjecture,The Riemann Hypothesis,The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture are some of the hardest mathematical problems. But some of the mathematical problems have not been solved like the Riemann hypothesis, P versus NP problem, Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, Hodge conjecture, Navier-Stokes equation etc.
