“My Father, My Hero”
- Prasiddhi Dangol - 2027017, G ... 28 December, 2020

My father is my hero. He is a very good person and I love him. On this year’s ‘ FATHER’S DAY’, I gave him a surprise. I prepared a very special card for him. Since I am Newar, my mother made bara and egg to celebrate this festival. I had my big brother also. So we had planned to celebrate this festival together with great joy. So on that day, I  woke up at 6 AM. I cleaned up myself, then I made the living room which is big, clean and a nice place to celebrate. My father always goes for a morning walk. So he didn't miss that day as well. I had a great time surprising him. But sadly, I couldn't sit all day with my father. The reason is that my grandfather has a brain hemorrhage which means a tiny muscle in his brain burst and there was internal bleeding in his brain so he was kept in the ICU. But it had already been months that he had been there and after some months in the hospital, he was back at home and his home is in Balaju. He is fine now but he has paralysis so half part of his body does not function well. Still, he is not that well and cannot speak properly but that's fine because he is good after all. My father always leaves home after lunch and comes back in time for dinner. So that day as well,  I couldn't spend the day with him but that's alright because I had a great morning and that's what matters. My mother, father, and older brother and I had a very enjoyable time, my mother wished her father on messenger through video call and my father wished his father in Balaju. That day we all sat together and had a great family lunch and after a while, my father went to Balaju. This year’s Father’s Day was really great and I still remember it as a sweet memory!

Being Truthful
- Aaradhya Prasai - 2027001, Gr ... 24 December, 2020

Being truthful means to develop a practice of speaking the truth throughout life. A person who practices speaking truly in his/her life possesses a strong moral character. A truthful person shows good behavior, always follows rules and regulations, maintains discipline, speaks the truth, and is punctual. An honest person is trustworthy as he always tends to speak the truth. A major component for developing moral character is being truthful. Truth helps in developing many good qualities like kindness, discipline, honesty, etc. Lying, cheating, lack of trust, stealing, greed, and others are not part of being truthful.

Truthful people are sincere, trustworthy, and loyal throughout their life.  Truthfulness is valuable and it is a habit of great importance. Honesty is the first chapter in all the books. A person with truthfulness is respected by everyone. Truthfulness plays an important role in everyone’s life and it is a character that is visible with open eyes like an open book.  Truthfulness is the real character a person earns in life by being sincere and dedicated towards it. Lack of truthfulness in society is not so good. Home and school are the places where a child learns moral ethics. Thus, the education system should ensure to include some essential habits. Children must be instructed right from the beginning and in their childhood to practice honesty.

People should realize the value of being truthful in order to manage social and economic balance. Honesty is an essential requirement in modern times. It is one of the best habits which encourages an individual.

Superstition
- Aaradhya Prasai - 2027001, Gr ... 23 December, 2020

Superstition is a belief or practice based on fate or traditional unscientific beliefs. Superstitions do not exist only because of a lack of awareness and education. It is born out of fear of the unknown. If a person does not have a logical answer, he seems to have faith in superstition. Many people around the world rely on superstition. Its foundation is tradition, culture, and practice for generations. Since it is rooted in society, it is very difficult to remove it.

For example, if a soccer player wears his lucky shoe and his team wins, he associates his victory with that shoe. He knows that shoes do not bring good luck. You can play with any shoe that you feel comfortable with. And winning is closely related to the art of the game and the coordination of the group. But wearing lucky shoes gives the player the impression that he can easily control the ball. This is also superstition.

Superstitions are found in many parts of the world. There are examples of superstition worldwide. In Japan and Korea, it is believed that writing a name in red ink kills the person writing the name. In the United States, people tend to stick to wood to keep what they say is not true. The Americans and other Westerners believe that the number 13 is bad and that it causes misfortune. They try to avoid bad luck by keeping themselves away from anything with 13 marks or 13 labels. In Russia, giving a pair of flowers to someone is considered as wishing bad luck to the person taking the flower. Similarly, in Ireland, luck and misfortune are decided by the number of birds. There are many such examples as this.

Let us now look at some examples in the context of Nepal. In Nepal, it is believed that slippers bring bad luck. It is believed that if a black cat crosses the road, it will be bad. Many people in Nepal have fallen prey to superstition. Such people are especially poor, weak, happy, marginalized. People also have been believing in witches. There is an evil practice called untouchability in society. There have been cases of people being beaten to death due to untouchability. I do not believe in any superstition. It could also be because of the environment in which I grew up. My parents and relatives never taught me to believe in superstition. My parents taught me to believe only in hard work, logic, and facts. In this way, I have never followed any superstition. Also, my family doesn’t believe in success that comes from superstition or the success that comes from luck.

However, I have been listening to the superstitions in Nepali society and finding out through the news. Superstition has taught people to rely on supernatural powers rather than on modern science and technology. This is having a negative effect on our society but in the future education will help people to better understand the reality and come out of superstitions

My experience at DSS so far
- Rushav Paneru - 2027025, Grad ... 22 December, 2020

I am Rushav Paneru and I am a new student at DSS. My experience has been great so far. I like the teachers but I haven't met my friends or teachers physically, but we talk a lot on GoogleMeet and Hangouts. I like many subjects but my favorite subject is Science and it’s not that I dislike other subjects and I focus only on science. I like other subjects but like everyone, their favorite subject, mine is Science. Because of online classes,  I haven’t met any friends in this school but the first friend I made is Arshan. He is very good and we are best friends. We play Roblox together and also video chat.

In online classes, all the teachers are very nice to me but if I do something wrong then obviously they get disappointed but calm down later. I used to study at Malpi. It was a boarding school, but it wasn't in a good place. I like DSS more because it is a day school and it’s near my house.  I have not even visited the school but I have high hopes for it. The essential skills of DSS taught me to be good and kind, and be respectful towards my teachers and friends. I must do good in my studies and extracurricular activities. So, that's the main thing I got to say about DSS so far and my experience has been really good.

Finally, I would like to say that through online education, I am able to learn many things. When our teachers give an article to write or to make a presentation, we have to research from the internet and we have learned many new things in the process. I have written articles and made presentations and have done research from the internet. In my former school, there were many facilities and because I have not yet visited the school, I cannot compare it with my previous school. So this is all I have to say now but, once I start going to school, I know there will be many more things to write about

The largest animal in the world
- Eshita Lal Shrestha - 2027024 ... 14 December, 2020

Blue whales are the largest animal ever known on earth.  These marine mammals rule the ocean. Up to 100 feet long and more than two hundred tons their tongues alone can weigh as much as an elephant. Their heart is as big as an automobile. Blue whales reach these mind-boggling dimensions on a diet composed nearly exclusively of tiny shrimplike animals called krill. During certain times of the year, a single adult blue whale consumes about 4 tons of krill a day. The giant animals feed by first gulping an enormous mouthful of water expanding the pleated skin on their throat and belly to take it in. Then the whale's massive tongue forces the water out through the thin, overlapping baleen plates. Thousands of krill are left behind and then swallowed. Blue whales look true blue underwater, but on the surface, their coloring is more like a mottled blue-gray. Their underbellies take on a yellowish hue from the millions of microorganisms that take up residence in their skin. The blue whale has a broad, flat head and a long, tapered body that ends in wide, triangular flukes. Blue whales live in the world’s oceans, except the Antarctic. These mammals occasionally swim in small groups but usually alone or in pairs. They often spend summer feeding in polar waters and undertake lengthy migrations towards the Equator as winter arrives. These graceful swimmers can accelerate more than 20 miles an hour when they speed up.  Blue whales are among the loudest animals on the planet as well. They emit a series of pulses, groans, and moans, and it’s thought that, in good conditions, blue whales can hear each other up to 1000 miles away. Scientists think they use these vocalizations not only to communicate but, along with their excellent hearing, to sonar-navigate the lightless ocean depths. Calves enter the world already ranking among the planet's largest creatures. After about a year inside its mother's womb, a baby blue whale emerges weighing up to 3 tons and stretching to 25 feet. It gorges on nothing but mother's milk and gains about 200 pounds every day in its first year.   Source: Encyclopedia on mammals
