About the Book

"The One and Only Ivan" is a children's novel by Katherine Applegate, published in 2012. The story is inspired by the true story of Ivan, a gorilla who lived in a domain for 25 years. It all explains friendship, freedom, and the importance of storytelling.

Plot Summary

The story follows Ivan, a silverback gorilla who lives in a glass domain at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. Ivan spends his days watching TV, painting, and interacting with his friends: Stella, an elderly elephant, and Bob, a stray dog. Life changes for Ivan when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, and he starts to see his environment in a new light. Determined to save Ruby from a life of staying in a domain, Ivan plans to free her and himself by using his art to communicate with humans.
