Gai is cow and jatra is a procession or festival. This festival generally falls in the month of August/September. This year's Gaijatra was on August 4, 2020, that is on Shrawan 20, 2077. This festival is one of the most popular festivals in Nepal. It is said that people in ancient times started worshiping Yamaraj, the god of death on this day. Gaijatra was started by King Pratap Malla. In Newar community in the Kathmandu valley, families who have a death during the year participate in Gaijatra. It is a festival which empowers people to accept the reality of death.
