Things to Know about Nirvana
Founder and Members: Nirvana was founded by Kurt Cobain (the lead vocalist and guitarist) and Krist Novoselic (bassist). The band went through a number of drummers, including Chad Channing, before bringing in Dave Grohl in 1990.
Band Name: The band was formerly known as Skid Row, Fecal Matter and Ted Ed Fred. Cobain said Nirvana settled on that name because he wanted a name that was pretty and nice instead of a mean name.
Cobain’s Death: Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home on April 5, 1994. He shot himself in the head, with high levels of heroin and diazepam in his blood.
The Smiley Face: The infamous Seattle strip club, The Lusty Lady's marquee featured a similar googly-eyed face, and it has long been assumed that this is where Cobain got his inspiration.

Teen Spirit: ‘Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit’ was a phrase one of Cobain's friends wrote on his wall, which Cobain initially misinterpreted. She was actually talking about the women's deodorant Teen Spirit when he assumed she was discussing anarchy.
