King Prithvi Narayan Shah was born in Gorkha on 11 January 1723 AD. He was the son of King Narabhupal Shah and Queen Kaushlyawati. He ascended the throne on April 3, 1743 AD at the age of 20. As king, he valued his people and enjoyed talking to his subjects about their general concerns. Before the unification, there were 54 states in Nepal. His first attack was on the Nuwakot Kingdom which failed at the first attempt. He conquered the kingdom only at the second attempt. His next target was Kirtipur but he was defeated two times. He even lost his beloved warrior Kalu Pande in the war with Kirtipur. After conquering Makwanpur, he attacked Kirtipur and finally gained victory over the kingdom. Similarly, before attacking Kathmandu valley, he conquered all the kingdoms around the valley which made it easier for him to gain victory over the Kathmandu valley.
