Shivaratri is the birth night of Shiva. Lord Shiva is called by many names; Bholenath, Nikantha, Pasupati, Mahadev, Sanker, etc. It is believed that Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati. He lives in Mount Kailash with a snake around his neck, wearing deerskin and sits on a tiger skin. He holds damaru and Trishul in his hand. On Shivaratri, children collect donations from people. At night, people burn the fire and celebrate Shivaratri.
