The Hunger Games

Katniss Everdeen, a young girl of 16, lives in the poorest part of the country, District Twelve, along with her beloved sister and their mother. Having lost her father in a mine explosion at a very tender age, she shoulders the entire responsibility of her family in the poverty stricken District Twelve. Fortunately she can hunt and thus she, along with her best friend and hunting partner, Gale Hawthorne, are able to sustain their respective families. All is well.

But Katniss' happiness is short-lived. The day of the reaping arrives when her entire world shifts and changes. When the Capitol sponsor Effie Trinket calls out her sister, Primrose's name as the girl tribute from the District Twelve, Katniss' worst fears are confirmed and her world shatters. The only thought that she has now is to save her sister from the cruelty and brutality of the Capitol. So, to protect her beloved sister from being a part of the Capitol's quest to conquer and inflict pain; to protect Prim from being slaughtered at the Hunger Games, a game where each tribute of the twelve different districts fought and killed to be entitle the winner and for sheer love of her sister, Katniss volunteers to take Prim's place and promises her to try her best to win an come back. It is then that all the sufferings and the dark times for Katniss begin.

The entire book then portrays Katniss' fight for survival, her fight to show the Capitol that neither do they own her nor is she a part of their evil games and her fight to win her way back keeping her promise to her sister. She along with Peeta Mellark, the boy tribute from District Twelve, together fight for freedom and unknowingly give the spark that the district citizens needed to start another uprising and rebellion against the Capitol's long autocratic rule.

Together they go from defying the Capitol to fighting for their lives; saving their families and friends to ridding the people from the fear of the Hunger Games and supporting the rebellion to standing against the Capitol. But all along the way what Katniss and Peeta don't realize is that all their actions may cost them their loves, families and friends or worse, even their own lives.
