Industries are big as well as small; they vary according to the available resources, means, and place. Cottage industries belong to the small industries. Cottage industries need very little manpower, resources, small machines, and investment in comparison to big industries. Such industries can be carried out independently by individuals.

In countries like Nepal, there are big industries in the capitals and few in developing towns whereas in rural areas people are dependent upon cottage industries and agriculture. Goods produced by cottage industries are made of pure materials and are healthy for people's health. Basket making, spinning, weaving, bee-keeping are some of the examples of cottage industries.

Cottage industries provide employment, especially to the lower class. Such types of industries are especially helpful to the peasants who are out of work for the major part of the year. Mainly people are involved in agriculture as well as in cottage industries for a better lifestyle. For example, people are involved in beekeeping so that they can sell the honey through their own cottage industries.

There are many cottage industries in the rural areas which need to be managed and developed properly. The cottage industries department head is helping them to improve and provide materials to the people who can't afford them. Training centers are also there for the improvement of the cottage industry.
