Dr. Ram Baran Yadav was the first president of Nepal. He was born on February 4, 1948, in Dhanusha. He joined the school only at the age of 16. He later received his M.B.B.S. degree from Calcutta Medical College, India.

When he was studying medicine in Calcutta, India, he came into contact with many Nepali politicians. He became a member of the Nepali Congress Party. He later became, from 1991 to 1994, the Minister of State for Health.

He also became the first president of the Republic of Nepal. Thus, he became the first person outside the royal family to be the head of the state. He was elected to the House of Representatives in the 1999 elections as a candidate of the Nepali Congress, becoming the Minister of Health in the next government.

In May 2007, Yadav's residence in Dhanusha was attacked by militants of the Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (JTMM). The JTMM hoisted their flags at his home and detonated a bomb. Baran Yadav contested the Dhanusa-5 constituency in the April 2008 Constituent Assembly election and won the seat, obtaining 10,392 votes.

Ram Baran Yadav was elected as the first President of Nepal on July 23, 2008. He received 306 out of the 590 votes, defeating Ram Raja Prasad Singh. He was sworn in as president on July 23, 2008. The Chief Justice of Nepal, Kedar Prasad Giri,  administered the oath of office and secretly administered Yadav at Shital Niwas. Yadav also administered an oath to Vice President Paramananda Jha.
