Florence Nightingale was born in Italy on May 12, 1820. Her parents were Francis Nightingale and William Nightingale. She loved learning and was very smart. Her dad taught her different subjects, and she was especially good at Mathematics.

Florence did not want to get married like most girls of her time. She had a dream to become a nurse, and she was determined to make it happen.

Back in Florence's time, hospitals were dirty and not well-kept. Many people got sick and died because of this. Doctors did not like nurses helping them, but Florence changed their minds. She taught nursing students and made sure hospitals were clean and safe.

Florence was very dedicated to her job. She also helped injured British soldiers during the Crimean War. She would visit them at night, carrying a lamp to check on them. That is why she is known as 'The Lady of the Lamp.'

In simple terms, Florence Nightingale was a smart and caring woman who became a nurse and worked hard to make hospitals better and help sick people, especially during a war.
